@sweetpopo163 I’m very impressed with the growth and maturity that you have displayed here. I live in a wealthier town and we have that kids go to CCs and then college. It’s smart and will give you a fantastic chance to be successful.
Thank you very much, Gearmom. I appreciate it!
Where did you apply EOP?
I am not going to recommend a gap year and working, because you just may make enough money where you would no longer be eligible for an opportunity program (and it does not take that much money to make you ineligible). IF you do do a gap year, consider something like City Year, Americorps, etc.
My other concern with taking a gap year, if you used fee waivers for the application process; paying SUNY/CUNY/Common app fees, once you graduate from high school, you are no longer eligible for those waivers meaning the cost of applying all over again can be cost prohibitive (Op states that s/he is eligible for Pell, meaning his/her mom does not have a lot of $$).
Have your counselor call and check the application status of the SUNY schools that you have not heard from yet. Have GC let them know that you applied to the EOP program and if you have gone through.
I am going to recommend tossing an application at Plattsburgh, Oswego, Brockport, Oneonta and Geneseo’s EOP program as they are still taking applications. Apply through the common app and have your GC waive the fee (or if you are already eligible for a fee waiver, just add the schools to your common app. Your GC can send email your transcripts and test scores directly to the admission office at these schools (s/he will have to fax the scores to Plattsburgh).
Update your FAFSA to add these schools (remove the ones where you did not get accepted).
If you have not done so update your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval tool
Go to the EOP site at these schools and down load the necessary forms.
Have your counselor scan and email
For Baruch, they are now looking to do a more holistic process. Did you submit an essay?
make sure that you did this part

Since you applied for SEEK, my best advice would be follow the money.
If you get into another school through SEEK, attend there, do well (above 3.3 gpa) and then transfer to another SEEK (Baruch)/EOP/HEOP program (remember you can only get into an opportunity program as a first time freshman, but once you are in you can transfer between programs. In addition Opportunity programs offer free graduate school through SUNY/CUNY).
all the best
Hello,
I checked my CommonApp and I applied for EOP with Binghamton and Stony Brook - and was rejected by both.
And yes I did do that essay portion of my Baruch application . I submitted my resume, and wrote an essay as well.
I will keep in mind the schools you suggested, and I am visiting Baruch’s admissions office today
Thank you!
You must apply quickly as they are starting to make EOP decisions or else you will not have a chance. I think you will be able to get into one of these schools EOP, then you can transfer to bing/stony brook in the future through EOP
How about CUNY College of Staten Island? There are some very good programs and brand new dorms.
If you do decide to attend a CC, and your friends ask you why, you don’t need to tell them the whole saga. Indeed, if you want to tell them anything, tell them that you thought it would be a good idea considering this surgery you’re going to have.
OP, I am going to chime in and strongly urge you to read, and re-read, and read again all of Sybbie’s posts to you. It sounds as if you have not gotten very good advice from guidance. Applying to Stony Brook and Bing EOP with those scores was not feasible. Luckily you are in NY and we have an excellent SUNY system. Please, please take Sybbie’s advice quickly. Taking on a burden of debt in your situation does not sound reasonable by any means – especially when you still have the options she has mentioned. Baruch would be great, but definitely have more than one school’s admissions, if things don’t work out!
Many parents don’t realize how complicated admission is these days, or how expensive it is either, and so my heart goes out to your family. We were in your mom’s shoes a few years ago and it has been a lot to learn. Best of luck!
Update! My mother and I agreed for me to go visit Baruch and ask about my application. I went early today and I spoke with someone there and they told me that my application and transcript is still in the process - and I was told that I can indeed apply to 5 more CUNY’s right at that moment.
So I took advantage of that and I now, in addition to Baruch, have applied to Lehman, Hunter, and City College of NY - as well as Hostos CC and Bronx CC !!
I am really grateful that I had all the guidance and encouragement from you all, and I am happy with the options I now have. (I should have applied to these CUNY’s since the beginning haha) Thankfully, all of these are extremely affordable to me and my mother - and they are all in the location I would love to remain in. Staying close to home is best for me especially since I may be physically weak for a while after the surgery.
I will continue to work hard acedemically no matter where I go; and I know that where ever I get accepted to/end up attending, whether it be a 4 year or starting off at a CC then transferring, I will still be just as happy and successfully in what ever I choose to do when I graduate !
Thank you again for your help, everyone!
Don’t overlook College of Staten Island(CSI)! I second the recommendation made earlier for CSI- I taught there many years ago and it’s a nice campus, and they’ve done a lot of improvements. Your scores / grades may be a better fit for CSI, and they have good faculty and programs. You may want to add it to your list.
Oh - just wanted to add that you seem like a mature young person, who is willing to listen to others! That in itself is a great attribute. Keep us posted once you decide!
Will do and thank you!
