It seems to me, Knifey, that implicitly comparing me to the Nazis is rather more serious than anything I have said thus far. Not only is it a grave insult, it trivializes the actual Holocaust and those who perpetrated it. That is why I asked you to be less liberal with your use of that particular epithet in the future. Not everyone you meet is going to be as cool-headed as I am, and you risk offending someone.

Have you ever heard of Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal"? It is an essay in which he asserts persuasively that if the penniless Irish Catholics sold their children for consumption it would solve the country's food and money problems simultaneously. There is no "punchline", and yet somehow literary critics realized that Swift was not, in fact, advocating commercial cannibalism. Shocking, huh?

Ah, ELorax has debunked my theory. I must now be off to formulate another sinister hypothesis to fulfill the Führer's plan and prove the superiority of the Aryan race. Muahahahahaha.

^That is SARCASM, Knifey. Got that? SARCASM. I cannot make this clear enough.

You guys have blown everything way out of proportion. Sarcasm cannot be just detected in your 4 lined post as opposed to an essay, Dave. It obviously shows none until you admitted you were actually sarcastic. By looking at all these posts, it seems as though you all like fueling the fire for your own good. Pffft...

I'm not saying your first post should be taken seriously as of now, but I do want to emphasize that should you make a joke, it needs to be clear-that you love the power of short Asians.

I had no problem understanding that it was sarcastic.

If you ask me, YOU are the one who has blown this out of proportion. As soon as you started comparing people to Nazis, you seriously crossed the line.

Hmm didn't read the last several posts, but I'll just say that my boyfriend is asian, and his neck still hurt after the ACT. HOWEVER, he has the amazing skill of being able to sleep anywhere at anytime.

I got that he wasn't serious immediately. Actually though, MDane's post is verbal irony, not sarcasm. Sometimes the definitions are used interchangably, so the confusion is understandable. Usually though, sarcasm aims to ridicule or belittle a particular person. Verbal irony is just consciously saying something that isn't meant.

It's interesting to note that MDane's statement doesn't fall into any of the explanation's three general categories of verbal irony, although it is verbal irony nonetheless.
