Writing down the income is right in the application so it is electronic. just fyi.
Was your mom required to file taxes? Or not? Did she have income at all?
If she was require to file taxes, the issues are far deeper than just getting fee waivers.
You can take info from her pay stub if that is where her income comes from. If she has October 31 stub then just look at the YTD amt. divide by 10 and multiply by 12 to get a 12 month estimate.
If required to file…she WILL need to do 2015 taxes if you plan to apply for need based financial aid.
If she is not required to file taxes, she will need to complete a non-filers statement.
It’s OK to put her income down from pay stubs. For 2015, that is how most everyone will figure it out, as taxes for 2015 are not yet done.
No she was not. haha i don’t think id be posting on here if she was.
She did not make income, only received child support.
and it is not much ^^^^
Then you put that child support amount down as her “incime” because it is viewed as such.
You should have documentation of that child support amount.
Okay. It is transferred to her bank account. Do those statements count?
But… “Child support payments are neither deductible by the payer nor taxable to the payee. When you calculate your gross income to see if you are required to file a tax return, do not include child support payments received.” ?? Sorry, I’m confused. I’d still put that down for the fee waiver because thats what we have lived off of right?
Filing a tax return is not same as fafsa. child support is Other income on fafsa. When you fill out the UC fee waiver., put the total annual child support as your income. You will get 4 waivers for UC. I think also 4 for CSU.
If a student’s other parent is making child support payments, then is student required to do income reporting for that child-support paying parent?
For FAFSA purposes the student only reports the income/assets of the parent with whom s/he lives the majority of time.
UC only requires FAFSA and the custodial parent.
@BrownParent Thank you! If they contact me or anything I just say that is the child support right?
They will not contact you about the application fee waiver, likely. You will file a FAFSA after the first of the year, which will show child support as funds received. You will probably be selected for Verification, which means you will have to supply all kinds of information on how you live. So start a folder where you collect photo copies of the child support checks and your mom’s bank statements. Are you on any kind of aid or free lunch? That will simplify the FAFSA reporting. However if you are verified they are going to ask for tax returns. You will indicate on FAFSA that you mom is not required to file taxes, I believe. You may have to submit some kind of Non Filers Statement. See for example this page for UC Davis on forms you may be asked to submit. You want to be prepared so that your aid is not delayed.

The big thing if you are verified…if all the money your mom is getting is child support, the school is going to want to know how you are able to pay your living expenses on that amount. They will want to be sure you are not getting financial support from any other source.
@BrownParent @thumper1 My mom actually just got a job. So I asked her to be done with her taxes before March 1st. How does this change things?
@BrownParent @thumper1 Sorry I have a lot of questions
