Thank you for your advice! This seems like a much better strategy than lying / playing dumb

Okay guys,

after a lot of thought, I think i’ve decided on telling the RD the truth, but omitting certain details unless they are asked for.

The truth is, while me and my friends weren’t lighting up IN my suite, we did smoke weed. And there were 6 of us, so there may have been a smell.

The smell can’t have been very strong however, because we didn’t smoke in the room. In fact, the RA didn’t come into my room looking for weed. He came to my room because of an improperly parked bike.

So, I think I’ll tell my RD that we went out to my friends apartment (which is true), and that we came back to my room. If she asks if we smoked weed, I guess I’ll tell her the truth, but I’m hoping it wont be asked about.

What do you guys think about this plan?

What will you do if your RD sees this thread?

That would be problematic I guess? I would probably tell her that I was seeking advice from my peers in an anonymous way.

If you did smoke weed, but not in the Residential Halls, the RD can and will not do anything about it. He/she will not report it to the police, because your friend’s apartment is not within the jurisdiction of the residential halls. Despite what many people think, Hall Staff is not a sub-category of UCPD.

Telling the truth about it will actually make your story more believable that you didn’t smoke it in the dorms, since otherwise your story (at least how it sounds to me), is that none of you smoked in the dorms but somehow your room smells like Marijuana. Hmmm…

Since the incident in question is Marijuana, he/she will most likely ask about how the smell got there. Best advice I can give you is for you to tell the whole story: that you went out to a friend’s apartment and smoked there. You came back afterwards, and the smell lingered on your person.

The RD might ask you if you have Marijuana stashed in your room, but that’s up to you as to how you answer it. While Hall Policy does not cover you smoking outside the halls, it does prohibit you from possessing it in the halls.

Do RDs actually go on here to look at this stuff? o.O

Hall policy mentions

1) Use or marijuanna
2) being under the influence while violating any other rule. My friend did park his bike incorrectly while “under the influence”

Isn’t that not a violation of hall policy?

Use of Marijuana is only in the Residence Halls; Hall Staff do not have jurisdiction over usage outside of the halls. For example, if you were to have a party with some Hobos in People’s Park, Hall Staff isn’t going to chase you down all the way to South Side.

Number two; yes, but that’s your friend, not you. If your friend also lives in the residence halls, then he will be responsible for that rule violation. If your friend is not a resident but your guest, then you will be responsible for his breaking hall policy (Guest Policy).

Hope this helps!

I very rarely post, but judging by your posts it seems that you are very worried about this incident. Honestly, relax. You are not going to get kicked out of the res halls much less Berkeley. SWIM had RAs come into their dorm room, catch people smoking, find 5 grams of weed on the table and a bubbler. They had to pay $25 and go to a 2 hr group meeting. you will be fine, just be upfront.

Relax.

They are definitely not going to call your parents. You’re an adult, and college is an adult institution. It doesn’t matter how serious the issue is: it’s between you, the university, and possibly the law (usually only for felonies). Someone I knew beat up another student and was referred to Sproul. Even then, it was up to him to notify his parents that he was suspended, and the only reason he had to do so is because he’s financially dependent.

Even if you do get referred to Sproul, it’s basically between you and the university.

The idea here is that things are handled internally if appropriate. In your case, it’s just a scary meeting with the RD.

Also, even if the RD did see this thread, he’ll probably just laugh it off: the process clearly intimidated you.

A weed-related offense is really nothing. Your parents won’t find out. You won’t get kicked out. Just make sure you’re nowhere near your room next time you light up.
This. Thanks for clarifying our job description.
