My rank and GPA was wrecked by Middle school classes, do I still have a chance?

I’m at my freshman year, and in my first semester I made a 4.425 weighted GPA. The GPA in my school is calculated as .1 for every point of a grade. That means that a class on a 4.0 scale with a 93 would mean 3.3, and a 97 is 3.7, 90 is 3, 89 is 2.9, etc.

But then my school added in Middle school GPA. In my middle school, I took spanish 1, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Biology. The only class I did well in was Biology. I had a brand new teacher for Algebra 1 and got B’s, and my spanish teacher gave me free grades but didn’t teach me anything, so I failed the exams. I had very little algebra 1 skills going into geometry which made me struggle…

I was under the impression that middle school DOESN’T count, but because it does according to my school, my rank has drop to 20 and my weighted GPA has fallen half a point to 3.95, and my unweighted sucks.

Is there still a chance for me to be val/sal, or at least a chance to salvage what I have? This has gotten me real upset since I had plans to try to do what I can to get into a top school and get away from my home.

Your ranking might not change, but many schools recalculate GPA based on their system and would likely exclude middle school grades. You should contact colleges you’re interested in and find out if that’s the case

Never heard of a college including Middle School grades. Most colleges recalculate your GPA from your transcript, so you should be fine on the GPA side of things.

Regarding val/sal, you still have 3 years to increase your rank. Either way, you shouldn’t worry about it. Val/sal is decided at the end of your senior year (right?), by which time you will have chosen your college.

I doubt colleges would care. Hopefully, they don’t. My main objective of this year was to get decent grades and participate in college. I did the minimum to get in the top classes offered, so I got and am getting not the best but decent grades.
