I'm a first year student and I just found out today that my roommates are guys (I'm a female). I emailed reshall about this and they told me that it was a mistake, and that I will have to move out of my triple suite @ Foothill to either a double room in a suite or an open triple @ one of the units.

I'm not too happy with my options, as a double suite costs a lot more money and I don't think I'd want to move into a triple @ one of the units...

My question is, will I be able to keep my contract (and room with two other guys in a triple suite)? Is this even allowed? Am I insane/asking for trouble for even considering this?

If you’re okay with it, do not tell anyone else in res-hall about it. See how long you can live there without any administration noticing. At the very least, you’ll have to move anyways and it will make a good story.

Are you sure you don’t want to move into a unit triple? Some people from foothill/bowles/stern were dying to get into a unit, even if it is cramped space. And you’d save quite a bit of money with a triple as well. Also the whole argument that units are more social/fun as well.

I’m fairly sure they wouldn’t let you live with 2 guys now that you’ve informed them haha. Only a few universities allow people to room with the opposite sex (I think Stanford has some kind of policy)

It’s their responsibility to set things right.

You signed a contract for a Foothill triple, and it’s their obligation to provide it. The Unit triple is not an equivalent, so you should not accept it.

At this point, they need to cut their losses and put you in a Foothill double while charging you only the costs of a triple that you agreed to.

Yeah I’m pretty sure haha! The only reason why I chose foothill was because I heard the environment there is quiet compared to the units/good for studying. I DO plan to have a social life outside the dorms, though.

@excelblue
thanks, that makes me feel a lot better. I’ve already hit the ceiling at $15,300 for a foothill triple; I think it’s unfair to make me pay more for their mistake. =(

call housing and ***** about it to them. an open triple? is that like living in the unit lounge? that’s not really fun.

there’s probably some legal issue with living in the same room with the opposite gender, but if you’re really really sure (as in comfortable with the fact that you pretty much have zero privacy) , you might be able to get away with it. chances are small as you do have to sign contracts in the beginning of the year and the RA may notice (note again: may because some RAs just don’t give a **** about anything).

lol I have a double suite and i would have switched with you if you were a guy who accidentally got into a triple with two girls, but since it’s the other way around sorry no dice…

PS: I said that for humors sake. Your situation made me laugh and yeah I approve of the sitcom idea lol. I’m sorry for any inconvenience you have to go through but yeah they still have to charge you the triple price and not the double. Take care.

there shouldnt be a legal issue, i think i read that in unity house themed housing they have coed dorms, if you really wanted to live with them im sure you could use that in your case

Yes, don’t pay for their mistake. You have a right to insist on the same rate for a foothill double or, if you really for some reason want a triple, insist that they give you a foothill triple. After all, you have the contract to prove that you were allocated one. (: Keep us updated!

flaming-A mistake that was unintentional.
Be polite when you call/email Housing.
You may get a nice upgrade if you are calm and understanding. No need to raise your voice or get postal.
Plenty of time to correct mistakes like these.

Well reshall finally responded and for sure they’re not gonna let me keep my housing assignment (even with the Unity House argument hahah!) =( they’re gonna keep me in contract for a foothill triple until a space opens up. uugghh. i wonder how probable that is?
