I did not expect my reading score to be so low. I'm curious because I found SAT reading much more challenging than I did ACT reading--which was quite dry and boring. This is the first time I'm taking either test and I'm certainly retaking them come September/October. I'm expecting an 800 on Math and CR and god knows what on Writing.

My ACT math score is by far better than my mediocre SAT math score, but my reading score is embarrassingly low. The odd thing is when I took the real practice tests (red book) my English and Reading scores were hovering at 33 and my Science score at 31. I'm having trouble interpreting the skewed results and would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Anyone have any tips? Thanks!

First of all, don’t go into any standardized test “expecting” a perfect score. That sounds foolish.
Practice tests aren’t always perfect indicators, your book might not have been perfect. Maybe you had a bad day, were zoning out during the reading section(it is one of the later ACT sections) or you thought it was easy so you didn’t care enough.
I’m not really sure what you are asking. You don’t really have a question at all and it seems like you already know the answer. You’re the only one that can decide why you had a bad day haha.

Let me put it this way. I’m certainly taking these again, be that as it may. If I submit these scores to colleges as they are, what would they see and think. The 36 in Math “counters”, so to speak, the 700 on the SAT. By the same token my 760 is countered by the 24 in Reading. What would a college see?

I think a college will look at your highest score which is the sat. If you take act again focus on reading and English and you might exceed your sat score.

Colleges will probably see you as a flaky test taker.

Also, as a side note the ACT Math and SAT Math test way different things. ACT Math is straightfoward math, similar to a traditional highschool math test. SAT Math is more complex and contains some logic problems similar to an IQ Test.

Also SAT CR has a fairly nice curve, and 760 is 4 wrong, but 4 wrong on the ACT Reading isn’t nearly as good. Also, the ACT reading tests speedreading and not comprehension/synthesis.

Yeah I agree with all of that. I didn’t find SAT Math more complex, really. More easy to make careless errors, I knew exactly which three errors I had made in the car ride home from the exam itself; more than it having a higher level of complexity I found myself making more carless mistakes.

As for the reading, yeah it really is a speedreading test. I was cutting it very close on time. I always did on red book practice tests too, but never did that badly. Thanks anyhow, I’ll probably just do a bit of practice and retake the test.

Complex isn’t the right word- perhaps there is just more natural variance within scores.

The first time I took I got a 720. I made a few REALLY silly mistakes, such as using the formula for the area of a circle rather than for the circumference… oh well. I retook it and got an 800.

Haha, I can relate to that. I used Median instead of Mode, or something like that. With math the first few points make a big difference, leaving no room for careless error. ACT is more forgiving in that sense.

During practice tests I vacillated between 700-800, making anywhere between 0-2 mistakes. I guess I just have to focus on becoming more diligent.
