Hey everybody. Man, it's been a while since I've come back to CC. Anyway, I thought I'd share what I did with you, since it helped immensely. I began in the 1200s, but ended up with a 1560 on the old SAT, and an 800, 790, and 790 on the Writing, Math IIC, and US History SATs respectively. Now, I know that some of you here discourage SAT tutoring, but my SAT tutor worked wonders for me - in fact, he tutored about 10 of my friends, and all ended up improving between 200 and 400 points (I go to Yale, and they now go to Princeton, Stanford, UPenn, Duke, Brown, Cornell, and Northwestern’s seven-year med program, and a few miscellaneous places).

If you live in Southern California or the East Coast, I HIGHLY recommend Shawn Nguyen. He has been tutoring since 1992, and his company is called Tier1. His website is www.tier1on1.com. It's a little cheesy, but oh well. He taught me that to truly do well on the SAT, you have to see it the way Neo sees the code of the Matrix. The test is really all smoke and mirrors, and if you'll pardon the corny metaphor, I felt that I was able to see through all the smoke (and the mirrors too, of course). Anyway, if you have any questions for me about it, I'd be happy to answer them. He truly made a difference in my life and in the lives of my friends, and I thought I would share it with all y'all on CC. And to those of you taking the test, good luck!

I'm glad to see that cynicism hasn't died during my hiatus :-). In all fairness, do a little research before leveling such accusations. If you search my post history, you will notice that all (granted, there are few posts total) of my posts attest to the fact that I am actually Yale '09. Of course, if you wish to persist in your cynicism, there are two possibilities:

One, I am Shawn and I had the foresight two years ago to place those posts in anticipation of an occasion such as this.

Two, I am Shawn and I have hacked somebody's College Confidential account.

Then again, there is the likelier scenario that I'm actually just a college sophomore trying to share my experience. I'll let you decide.

It's obviously not SPAM, he's posted in the Yale fora and isn't arrogant like some ivy-leaguers I know that won't admit they've received any help...

Ironically, when other people most to my organizations website, I get my handle forcibly altered, all mention of our site removed from CC, but this guy in the OP outright advertises and CC doesnt do jack!!

Talk about a double standard!!

I think CC is a bunch of hypocrits, if they dont remove the OP in the next 24 hours, then the proof will be pretty clear to all.

Currently, the OP has been up for abour 8 hours, when will it be taken down?

Oh, that would be me, huh. Chris - I am not trying to 'outright advertise'. I thought of him the other day and just thought that I would share my experience with you guys. So much hostility from everyone :-.

Oh. Actually, that would make a lot of sense. You will be a successful entrepreneur one day. I suppose that, given the sensationalistic title of this thread and its (perhaps) overzealous content, I was inviting such speculation. However, and I can't quite figure out why it is that I even care about defending my honor on an anonymous internet message board, I certainly have no financial interest in any of this, and my intentions are as black and white as this text. I'm just sharing a positive experience that really worked for me, that's all.

That said, and this is perhaps the philosophy major in me speaking, I would ask you to consider the following. Even if I had a financial stake in all this, would that discredit my claims or somehow invalidate Shawn's efficacy as a tutor? Now, certainly, such a revelation may cast doubt on the veracity of my claims in the first place, but assuming my claims to be true, I see no reason why my interest or, as is actually the case, lack thereof would have any bearing on the question of whether or not he is a resource worth exploring. Assuming, though, for the sake of argument, that for financial or other reasons my claims are untruthful, in what way does this affect things? Well, for one, he might in fact be a very poor tutor and a waste of one's time and money. On the other hand, given the fact that one could call him up expressing only a tentative interest in his services, and that he would then speak with you or meet with you to illustrate his methodology and represent himself to you in a tangible way, and thereupon you would be able to make your decision, even deceptiveness on my part should hardly be enough to deter those whose interests may be piqued because, as the expression goes, there is much (in my opinion) to gain with very little (time and a very small phone bill) to lose.

Now, to address the question that is really on your minds, 'What is up with his sentences? They're about as cumbersome as a 250 pound 6' by 6' by 8' box,' I just drank a cup of coffee, as I have much work to do and very little energy with which to do it.

As far as I know (I'm not an expert on the subject, as I only sporadically talk to him online), he is actually tutoring now on the East Coast now, so I would imagine that it could still be one on one in person.

I will come clean, my anger was misdirected at you, Makisupa. I was upset that CC forcibly altered my handle and removed all mention of a site that I help run, all because other posters found the site helpful and were recommending it to others on CC. The site in question offers free advice, but some of it is mine, which is why I had the site's name in my handle, so that no one would think that I was surreptiously trying to bolster it.

Anywho, I see your post after being b**ch-slapped by CC admin, and I went a little overboard. IMHO, your post comes across to me as a commercial, whether you meant it as such or not. I was ticked that CC picked me out and punished me, and I jumped the gun and basically thought: if CC is after me for other people posting the site's name, then they better go after the straight advertising in the OP of this thread.

I still think what I thought originally, but with everything else that gets posted on CC, It didnt justify my argumentum ad hominem or ad postinem (former philosophy major as well (also Biochem)).

It's okay. I can understand your frustration. Forum administration can be a tough thing on all parties involved. And I suppose that I see why my post sounds commercial. In the future, I need to learn to tone down my enthusiasm, as this isn't the first time people have pointed out that my level of enthusiasm for things makes it sound like I'm advertising for something. Such as a sandwich.
