My situation help!

Hi. I have lived in the US for about 11 years. I was on a visa with my family (dunno which) but a couple of years ago my family decided to apply for permanent residency (green card). Ill be applying to colleges this year and I was wondering how my situation plays out. Am i considered an international student when I dont have a visa anymore? Do I count for instate tuition for my local University of Washington? Also, can I attend a college without a visa? Thank you for the help!

you’re considered an international student until you have the actual green card in hand.

forget college, without a valid visa, you’re not even allowed to stay in the US.

Are you now a permanent resident, or did you lose your legal status in the US when your family applied for a green card (and you didn’t get one)?

No we didn’t not get one… we’re still under the process. From what I know I think we had to give up visa but yet we are not illegal. Does this work? o.o Like we all have social numbers and work permits - which are part of the process but not the actual green cards yet

Until you receive the decision, you are legal. If you are denied, then you get 30 days to leave the country (or so it was with friends of mine.) I don’t think it’s a good time for you to be considering college, honestly. Wait until you know what you have so you can work from there. It’ll be a much easier situation once you get your green card.

Do you expect to receive your green card before you apply to college? (Do you have a current priority date, or are you still waiting for one? If you had an official medical exam or had your fingerprints scanned, you should get the GC very soon.)

If you do get your green card in time, everything should go smoothly.

If you don’t expect to receive your green card soon, I would recommend that you talk to the colleges you plan to apply to. Only they can tell you authoritatively how your application would be processed and whether you would be eligible for in-state tuition. You should be allowed to attend college with a pending green card application, but the university may or may not give you a hard time about it.
