My son, who is interested in Biology (genetics research, in particular) is deciding between Brandeis and Tulane. He’s a NYC kid who goes to public school and is used to a very diverse community. Any insights?
Would you describe him as more laid back or competitive? Is he all set on Genetics research or wants to keep his options open? I already know he is more of a city person, as opposed to a rural or suburban person, and that he appreciates diversity. How far away from home is his comfort zone? How important are athletics to him? Has he visited both campuses? I am asking these questions because these are both excellent schools with similarly talented student bodies. The answers to them will put us in a better position to provide advice to you.
Regarding academics, biology might be Brandeis’ strongest program. Your son would be unlikely to find it lacking with respect to his interests and goals.
Assuming the money is the same , where do you see your kid doing well in, Boston is just NYC north while New Orleans is a whole different lifestyle compared to NYC, I think part of college is to experience different ways of life to enhance the experience so it , Tulane would be a big plus. Boston is much easier to get your kid if something goes wrong and they need to close campus again.
Um, don’t come to MA and say that.
You do have a point though. Brandeis is in the northeast and the culture won’t be that different from home. Note that it is not in Boston. It’s in Waltham which is about 15 miles outside the city. Brandeis is not a city school. It’s much easier to get to downtown New Orleans from Tulane than it is to get to Boston from Waltham.
I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer here. Your son should go to the school that he likes the best.
