My son the consistent underachiever, how can I explain how he is ruining his life?

" We are not amongst those who want their kid to be a doctor or lawyer."
– I agree.

Generalities are just generalities. There are PhD recipients on food stamps but there are also high school grads who bring home 7 figures. Many times, the attributes that makes a person a good student run counter to what makes a person a good entrepreneur-- which may be a better way for many to become rich than trying to rise through the corporate ladder.

“OP - You’ve lost your mind.”

This is all you really know about this kid. Yes, the law is a challenging field, and the market right now is terrible, but if it’s all he’s ever wanted to do, let him go for it. Law is a wonderful profession for those with drive and talent. Good grades and ivy diploma help, but are not essential. It’s a people business, not unlike sales, so if he loves it that will come through and impress clients. He should try to intern with a court or law office. Speak to as many practicing lawyers as possible, and keep debt to a minimum (night school is a good bet).
