my story...

Hey everyone let me explain my situation to you I go to Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and frankly, I dont really like it. It's in the middle of nowhere, and the people here are mostly hicks. Also, everyone here is from Ohio(which im not), so there is virtually no geographic diversity. Lots of people go home on the weekends and the people that do stay never want to go out and drink or anything. I mean don't get me wrong, you shouldnt be going out everynight and getting drunk, but it seems like my friends that go to other schools are partying more often. And because everyone is from Ohio, virtually no one has heard of it outside the state, so im pretty tired of having to tell everyone where I go to college.

I'm doing really well (A's and B's) so far, and I am very involved my my major(journalism) by writing on the newspaper and working for the TV and radio stations on campus. However, I have a problem. Because I dont have enough credit hours, I have to submit my HS transcript and test scores. My H.S. GPA was a 2.65, which im worried is really gonna hurt my in the transfer process. My test scores werent that great either (1650 on SAT, 23 on ACT) So im wondering if my hs transcript will be bad in the process, becuased my grades were so bad. ALso, will the fact that I am not coming from the most presitgious school hurt me?

As for schools I am thinking of, im going to apply to University of Maryland and Syracuse, and possibly applying to BU. I was thinking I might apply to one or two more schools from this list

Here are a list of schools im thinking of applying to. Im obviosuly not going to apply to all these schools, but if anyone could give me some insight as if I have a chance at any of theses school it would be great thanks much!

Northwestern
Pitt
Indiana University
Michigan State
UCONN
Ithaca College
Northeastern

Anyways, if anyone could give me some insight if I have a chance at any of theses schools? I don't know anyone that has ever transfered, so i kind of have no idea what really to do here, so any advice would be really really great!

sorry I didnt mean to double post it like that but you get the idea....

i doubt you'd get into northwestern, but the other schools seem like a good fit for you if you can maintain a good gpa. i'd aim for a 3.5 and you should have a good chance at all of those schools except for northwestern.

bump......

Hi,
I live 20 minutes from BG. Right now I'm in school in NY, but a number of my classmates go to BG.

I think you have a good shot at transferring to most of those schools, since your college grades are good. They will prolly place more weight on those than your high school grades. Northwestern is probably a reach though.

Good luck! I'm in the reverse situation, I am thinking of transferring back to Ohio, not to BG though. I think it's a fine school if you grew up in Ohio and plan on staying in Ohio, especially if you want to be a teacher.

What state are you from?

ames ironically I am from Upstate N.Y., so I am obviosuly not from Ohio, and dont really plan on staying here after graduation. But im probably going through the opposite culture shock that you are. I could imagine if people here went to school in NY, it would be a big culture shock for them, espically if they went downstate near NYC.

Your HS transcript and scores will hurt your chances greatly at
Northwestern.

For the others, youhave a better than average chance at IU and Pitt.

Chances okay at Michigan State and Ithaca.

Decent at UConnecticut and Northeastern.

With a year of grades and 24-30 credits, your chances are better at all the schools, as you won't need your HS transcripts. Double check at UConn to see what they recommend for transfers.

Wow, that is a weird coincidence.

Culture shock, that's it exactly. It took me a little bit to figure out that that may be what is going on.

I'm at Vassar, in the Hudson Valley.

I'm looking for someone else's view, and since you've been to both NY and OH, what do you see as the differences? What have been your experiences with the people in NY and OH? Don't be afraid to insult OH, trust me, I don't mind. I'm just looking for another perspective.

To me it seems like people here live their lives at a slower pace. People in New York live thier lives at a very fast pace, and people here just are'nt really like that. For example, ive been really busy this past week with the newspaper and the radio station and school and when i only have time to talk with someone for a couple of minutes, they look at me funny. Also, it seems to me like Ohioans, or at least the people that didnt come from big cities like Cleveland, Cincy, or Columbus are much more "country" than i am used to for lack of a better word, and it also seems like these people don't really see the world outside of their little hometown. It seems like they grew up there, they went to colleg there, and theyll work there.

On the plus side, people here are much friendlier. I find that people I am not necessarily friends with are saying hi to me in the halls, but that may just be what happens when you live in the same building as someone. Also, you definately do not see as many of preppy guys wearing popped collars, and the girls that have orange skin crusing around in the corvette that daddy bought them. Back home, that was basically my HS.
