I was planning to ask my english teacher to write a letter of recommendation for me, but she is leaving my town next school year. She said she can still write my letter of recommendation, but we'll only be able to keep in touch via internet, so I want to talk to her more about it now, when I still have some time. I am not sure what to ask her and what materials should I give her now, before the applications are available. Please, help!

Are you a junior now? If so, why not ask her to write the recommendation now?

Right now, you should give her a list of your accomplishments and activities. Give her a copy of the Common App's teacher recommendation form (you can use last year's).

If you're a junior, give her the list of schools you're intending to apply to, and stamped, addressed envelopes. Give her a couple of extra stamped, but unaddressed envelopes in case you decide to apply to any others. Put stamped postcards addressed to you into each of the envelopes, with something like "Please drop this postcard in the mail so that I can be sure you received Ms. ______'s recommendation. Thank you." (and put the name of the school on the postcard so you know who got the letter!)

Alternatively, your teacher may want to write the letter and give it to you to copy and send. That's what my d's teacher did when he left. That may work out better if you're a sophomore now.

If you live in Romania, you might want to give your teacher just plain envelopes without stamps and then put all the small envelopes (two teacher recs, school report, fin aid application if applicable) into one big envelope. That might save you a ton of money for postage.

thanks 4the advice!
