My theory on UC admissions...

I dont know about you but this is how i think about the admission process in the UC system. I really think that because of schools like UCLA, UCSD and UCSB are not that hard to get into. i just think that it might be scary to look at the acceptance rate cus UCLA and etc. have low acceptance rates. but there must be a pleathora of students that apply with low gpa’s and basically no honors class and low test scores. What do u guys think???

you are on the money...even when i visited the colleges the adcoms made it sound like it was impossible to get in. it might not be that easy, but its definitely not that difficult. plus, it depends greatly on what department you apply to--letters and sciences weight verbal scores higher and engineering math higher. Uc is a state system and there are alot of campuses. thus, the colleges will have a TON of 3.7/3.9 weighted students who meet the minimum eligibility requirements and apply b/c it is their dream school. nearly all the adcoms and teachers and counselors I talk to say im in to any UC 95% chance--just for reference...
1470 SAT 670v 800m
770math2c, 800 chem, 610 writing
ec's pretty good, comm. service pretty good, 3 sports
ELC for engineering program

cool, dwintz. this is a bit offtopic, but for engineering to berk, does your essays have to address why you want to do engineering?

Bri - no. they do not.

and dwintz- i have 100% admissions chance to UCBerkeley. = P
and this is an admissions officer telling me. = P
1480, 760v,720m
800mathiic,790biology,720writing
4.32UC GPA
very strong ECs.. and i have hookups with the adcom (through a program at cal) and i already met one of the top admissions officer who went over my stuff and said its not a matter of them wanting me.. its a matter of me wanting to go.
oh yeah. First Generation college student, immigrant, blue-collar.

yeah i barely caught that on the major selection thing. it strongly recommends it which means you better lol. more stats for berkeley, 700+ verbal is about 47.3%, 700+ math is about 39%, GPA > 4.0 about 47.9% admit rate. ELC is about 62.8%. SAT 2 math IC 700+ is 32.7%, SAT2 math 2c is 44.5%. SAT 2 writing is 47.4% admit rate. These aren't helpful for engineering people though. My friend goes to berkeley for nuclear engineering i need to get some of the stats from him for the engineering program. The average GPA is 4.15, SAT I is 1340, SATII math is 690, and SAT2 writing is 669.

wait, it says on the website, applicants to the college of engineering should include their interest in engineering in step 7 yadda yadda right???

how do you calculate the UC GPA...i think mine is going to be sky-high b/c they don't athletics and ding-dong classes

Aw crap, I got lazy and reused my Stanford essay, which is pretty good, for my UC app. I also read that we shouldnt do that either. Well, should I just apply under college of letters and sciences for Berkeley. Also, do all the other UCs require that I need to talk about why i like engineering also?

Here are my stats:
ELC
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Most rigorous courseload. 3 APs last year and got 5,4,4 on them. 3 APs this year

SAT I: M760 V720 = 1480
Writing: 800
Math IIC: 800
U.S. History: 740

Good ECs and well rounded. ie (asst. concertmaster of orchestra, production manager of newspaper, captain of varsity golf, mock trial )

My first essay was on Mock Trial, second on journalism and highlighted my skills that i can bring to the college paper, and third was a story about my innovation.

I really don't want to pull out another essay in a week, especially since Thanksgiving is around the corner. Sigh...

btw dwintz or anyone else: can you link me to the site where it explicitly says that? ive been looking for a while. thanks

ok in ur app where you are selecting your major for each UC, when you scroll down to the college of engineering for berkeley, it says 'Applicants to the College of Engineering are advised to discuss their interest in their intended major in the personal statement.' I would link you to the site but that would involve me giving you my ID and password...just check out your app and you'll see it

Ah ok, thanks a ton dwintz. I didn't see that when I was choosing the stuff. And I am glad to see that none of the other UCs recommend the discussion of interest of intended major.

i dont know about the rest of them...can u confirm that?

I went through all the other school's list of majors, and none of them said anything about writing about the major of interest in the personal statement like Berkeley did. Oh well, looks like I'm gonna apply under L&S for Berk.

arg this is getting lame posting back and forth...IM me if you want

make sure u have good verbal/writing for berkeley L&S, they weight those scores double the math i think

I think they may be on a GPA-Connected quota system..

EC: you are incorrect in your supposition, particularly for non-hooked applicants to Berkeley and UCLA, the two hardest UC's to gain admission. Our highly-rated SoCal HS had top kids rejected by both of those schools last year, but accepted at top east coast 'elites'. You should check out the web pages for each and you'll see that stats required for each school. While it is true, that both schools receive a 'plethora' of apps from low gpa and and test score kids (with one app, you can apply to all 10 campuses), they just don't get accepted, unless they have a hook. (word to the wise, the Berkeley adcom hates the word 'plethora' in an essay).

UCSD and UCSB are the next hardest to get into, in that order. However, Merced is likely to have 90%+ acceptance rate.

All:

if you're appling to L&S at Berkeley, you do not need to reference a major anywhere -- undecided is probably better than premed...But, if you plan on applying to one of the other colleges, such as College of Chemistry or Engineering, you had better mention it, and why, and have top math grades (Calc) and scores.

Dwintz: just to make sure, you do have a 99+% chance of acceptance, but that does not guarantee Berkeley or UCLA. It only guarantees a slot in the UC system, which could be Santa Cruz, Riverside or Merced. Since you did not post your gpa, hard to really guage likelihood at the big two.

Ice - your likely in.

Are all majors within the Letters and Sciences major equally difficult to get into? I'm applying as an econ major to almost all UC's. Do they still weight my SAT II writing more? Also, on my ACT my English Score is a 33, so that would help me alot. I'm retaking the ACT (I have a 29 now), what do you think I need to have a good shot at the UC's?
I have a 4.15 UC gpa, ok EC's (I moved 2x), great essays (as people have told me) and 710 Writing, 630 Math IC (i know low) and World History is pending. Thanks for your help

How hard is it for out of staters for Berkeley and UCLA?
