My unusual extra curricular

I am a junior this year and have already decided where I want to go to college. I am dead set on being a Duke Blue Devil, I have visited the campus several times and am in love with the idea of going there. As of right now, I am first in my class, taking 3 AP’s (Chemistry, US History and Language and Composition), I also am in band (Drum Captain), HOSA (Vice President, Ill be President next year), play Tennis, and I’m dual enrolled at my local school and a prestigious application admission online high school program. I volunteer on the regular and do everything I can to make myself seem more attractive colleges, Duke in particular. I am also planning on taking a college course this summer at Wake Forest because it is near where I live. On top of all of this, I also race. I am a championship winning race car driver, and the youngest driver in the fastest cars under the NASCAR sanctioning body, the Modified series. It is very time consuming and I LOVE doing it, but I am wary of putting this on college applications. Do you think admissions officers would view this as “redneck” and deny me admission? My SAT scores are low for Duke (though, very high for my high school) and I need something to set me apart from the crowd, I just think they make mistake me for a “dumb redneck” for being interested in racing.

You need to stop doing things to craft the “perfect application for Duke” and just BE YOURSELF, whoever that truly is. That is my advice to you.

Thanks! I didn’t realize I was posting under the hindsight section… hahah(:

If your grades are good and you’re doing prestigious extracurrics (which, btw i agree with OhioMom, you should be doing because you love, NOT because you think it looks good for Duke), then yes, you should absolutely include it. It’s very unique for a high schooler to race, especially if you have won big awards, and it’ll make you look even smarter for being able to balance such a time-consuming activity and schoolwork.

You’re a championship racecar driver and you’re afraid that will hurt your application? Not at all! In fact, that interesting skill is what will probably get you IN to the school and make you a more attractive candidate than another “typical” good student. Duke loves students who have done exceptionally well at something - no matter what it is. If anything, I’d play it up in my application as much as possible.

Incidentally, you wouldn’t be the first NASCAR driver at Duke. Current Duke junior Paulie Harraka is one of the best young drivers at Nascar’s K&N Pro Series West. He flies back and forth between Durham and California (where his crew is) on the weekends. You can google him to learn more about his schedule/results.
