Hey CC,

I'm super interested in business, but NOT finance. Should I consider Wharton?

The alternative is to major in economics at Harvard/Princeton/Stanford which keeps things more diverse, however I know that I'm interested in business and I worry that four years of learning about theoretical economics without business related classes is going to become uninteresting for me.

Basically I love the idea of getting hands on and practical and taking business related courses at Wharton where the economics is really applicable, however I am NOT interested in finance at all. I don't want to work on Wall Street, become a CPA, financial analyst, etc.

I know that Wharton has concentrations, so I could pick Entrepreneurship/Marketing as mine instead of something finance related?

Any advice is much, much, appreciated.

Thank you!

Finance is just one of 20 concentrations that Wharton offers, so if you are really interested in Business, then I think it would still be a better fit over learning economic theory for four years, like you said. Wharton is a great business school in all aspects including finance. However, most kids in Wharton do end up in finance, about 60% I think, but that still leaves 40% that don’t do it.

I’d venture to say that a lot of the kids at HYPS doing Econ will want to go in to finance as well, so it doesn’t really matter where you study. Yes, most Wharton students aspire to work in finance, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its fair share of entrepreneurs, marketing-hopefuls and future real estate gurus. If Wharton’s your fit, go for it.

If your interest is primarily business and i would guess more of an entrepreunal nature then Babson College is the best bet. The practical hands-on experience in actually running a small business is awesome…check it out.

If you’re interested in entrepreneurship, Stanford is the place to be. Just look at all the startups that have come out of that place. There is no question of its start-up prowess
