Finance at Wharton or Economics at either Stanford or Harvard?

What are some of the pros and cons of choosing between a business degree with a concentration in finance or an economics degree? About jobs in the business world, wall street etc Which would be best? Many people have told me that it's better to get an economics degree and then mba but Idont know which I would choose. Any suggestions?

come back when you have acceptance from Wharton, Harvard and Stanford and you’re struggling to choose between them.

I’m really no expert, but here is my take. If you want to end up on the west coast, go to Stanford - it doesn’t have much competition for finance jobs save Cal Tech, Haas, and CMC perhaps. Wharton/Harvard typically trump Stanford on Wall Street merely because of proximity.

In terms of Harvard vs. Wharton, its debatable whether one is better than the other for landing finance jobs, and for all intensive purposes, they are approximately on the same level (people will argue over which is better though). If one is “better” than the other, it is not by much. In terms of an MBA, that’s usually used as an exit strategy after landing a job; I know for a fact that only about 30% of Wharton alumnae go on to get MBAs, presumably because they land good enough jobs that they don’t need an “exit strategy” - though that’s mostly speculation.

But all in all, I’ll be surprised if you ever have to choose between the 3 considering how selective they are. Just get into some schools, and weigh your options. Best of luck.
