Please take a look at mine

When an individual is asked about when and why they chose their career, it is rare to hear that they wanted to be a physician at the age of eight years old to help people. However, I believe that my life experiences have not only reinforced this choice but have determined my course to become a Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon.

When I was very young, my great grandfather was diagnosed with fast moving lung cancer. The doctors held little hope for him. As I watched him deteriorate from being a vibrant man to his last days in a nursing home, I asked why. He quickly passed within a few months; I was devastated. There was such a loss and so many questions that I will never be able to ask him.
A few years later, my grandfather had a terrible accident that caused his lung to fail. He needed a lung transplant or would die. My whole family was actively involved with the decisions regarding his treatment through the transplant program. I was exposed to many of the details before the surgery and on weekly visits during his 9 month hospital stay. I thought that he would pass as my great grandfather had. Luckily, the surgeons were able to obtain the transplant in time and saved his life. While waiting for the transplant, his other lung grew too large and moved his heart causing additional problems. The surgeons came through again by performing a successful lung reduction. He is now doing well and I cherish every moment that I have with him.
This past winter, my family went on a trip with my grandmother. On the night of her 60th birthday, she suffered a heart attack. We were in a foreign country that spoke only Spanish. Due to my advanced course work with spanish medical terminology and my involvement with the Future Medical Professionals of America, I was able to facilitate the communication with the doctors to ensure that she was taken care of. I watched the doctors care for her for days until she was able to be flown out. I saw the stark contrast to how lucky we are in this country to have access to good medical treatment as compared to other parts of the world. She believes that I saved her life. I am only grateful that I was able to help. It was the most rewarding experience in my life.
My life experiences have not only reinforced my dream to become a physician but have assisted me in choosing the direction that I want to go. I want to become a Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon to help anyone who has similar problems to what my family has experienced. I have dedicated my life to reaching that dream through education and community service. Please allow me the opportunity to attend your school so that I can take the next step by getting the outstanding education that I need to make my dream come true. Thank you for your time and consideration.
