Myers Psychology for AP

My daughter will be taking AP Psychology this year. On the list of books to be purchased, her school listed Myers Psychology for AP. It is new and expensive (no used copies available at a low price) so I went on the publisher's website to see how much a new copy would run. However, I found that you can purchase the book along with online resources for studying for the exam. Does anyone here have experience using the online resources? Is it worth an extra $50.00?

Thank you.

Its not worth the extra money. I just used the textbook as did most of my classmates. We didn’t have to pay for the text books though because our school had a set of books. There are also free online extras that are online. The online resources plus a new copy isn’t worth the money. Buy the new edition but not the new online resource, there isn’t much of a difference because the textbook has hardly changed. it includes online quizzes and flashcards for the textbook. All you have to do is make an account for free.

[Psychology, Eighth Edition](http://bcs.worthpublishers.com/myers8e/default.asp?s=&n=&i=&v=&o=&ns=0&uid=0&rau=0)

Thank you, Gold. I keep hearing that it is not a hard course , especially if psych is one’s area of interest. What did you think of the test?

I’ve heard from A LOT of people that Psych is one of the easier APs. I had some friends who didn’t even take the class and just studied a review book a week before the exam and got 4’s and 5’s. I’m thinking of self studying this year and hopefully I pass. If your daughter’s taking an actual class for the exam, I don’t think the extra resources are really needed. Best of luck to your daughter!

I got a Myers psych book (brand new) from my psych teacher the first day, took it home, shelved it, and never looked at it again. Frankly, Psych is more about experiencing things and learning terminology than book reading. I would nix the online course, and possibly even the book if it’s not required.

I loved reading the Myers book. It’s full of interesting information and is very accessible. I don’t think the online resources would add much, though.

@Involvedmom, I live in GA so i don’t know my score yet but I felt prepared and I found the textbook and online help helpful for my class tests and the exam. Ill let you know how i did on the exam when i get my scores probably late next week. People say the textbook isn’t necessary to do well on the exam, but its necessary for the class tests. I would not have gotten good grades on my tests and the highest grade int he class if i had not kept up with my text book reading.

Thank you all for your input. The text is required, and as Gold said, most probably necessary to complete the class assignments. I’m willing to pay for the online study component, but only if it’s worth it. It sounds like extras she might not need. She needs to actually purchase the book because she attends a private school where books are purchased by the students. Usually I get good deals on books through Amazon Marketplace, but this particular book is very new (or this edition is, anyway) and no deals are available on this one.

Yes, please Gold- even if you prefer to PM me, let me know how you did- I will send good vibes your way in the meantime :)

Um. Screw Myers. That book is dense as hell. I just used Barron’s. Both for the class and for ap prep.

You seriously do NOT need it. It would be a waste of money, since there are free materials.

The book is a bit heavy, but manageable to carry back and forth every day.

@involved mom, Sure thing. I wish your daughter the best in her class and I’ll PM you my score once i get it.

Really? What’s your idea of an easy to read textbook then? I’ve read many college level texts and none were as clear as Myers.

I skimmed Myers, used a bit of 5 Steps, which was complete garbage, and scored a 5. There’s no need for the online resources - honestly, you don’t need Myers for the exam, but it will likely be helpful for the class. Pick up a copy of Barron’s and use that as your primary study method for the exam.

As far as textbooks go, I will say Myers is one of the easiest to read that I’ve seen.

I used the Myers Psychology book this year. I thought it was pretty awesome. It was my favorite textbook out of all of my classes this year. I ended up with a 5 on the exam.

I definitely agree with the others about Barron’s. It’s amazing! I think 5 steps is good too but I didn’t use it as much.

Well, for my Psych class, Myers was the textbook we used and we couldn’t really complete our assignments (chapter outlines) without it…
The Barron’s book, on the other hand, I didn’t use at all. THAT was a waste of money (if you’re paying even a little bit of attention in class all year, that is).

I was taught with Myers and I enjoy the humorous text and little tid bits of information on the sides. It’s a great textbook that thoroughly prepared me for the exam.

Thank you all for your input. I love this site. :)
