Hey, because I am an immigrant from Poland, I have an untypical name. I enrolled in high school with the name "bart" but my real name on my passport and birth document is "bartosz". Now since the apps ask for my name as seen on official document, should I use Bart or Bartosz? My Social security number is under Bartosz, but my ACT and transcipt is Bart, so what should i do!? Could they link my shorter name "Bart" to my SSN? Or will i have to write bartosz for every app?

I would apply to all schools using Bartosz (since that’s your official name).

In the common app and on many supplementals, there’s a section for “preferred name.” You can put Bart there.

WOuld they have a problem connecting my SSN which has bartosz to my name bart? I mean if i gave the college the number? ANd do the colleges even look at preffered name?

The college needs your legal name, which would be the name the college would use for all of your official paperwork. If recommendations are done using the name “Bart” just make sure that your SSN or the number the college gives you is on the form, too, so the college can match the recc with your app.

Lots of people are in this kind of situation, so it’s not likely that you will be the first one that the admissions office has encountered.

Once you get to college, you will need to use Bartosz for official purposes, but you can probably train all of your pals (and at least some of your professors) to use the shorter Bart if you prefer it.

another question! im currently applying to be an official citzeen.?my parents are citizens so i can be a citizen. should i say that im a citizen or permanent resident?!

you need to state you status is RIGHT NOW, not what you PLAN on being. In this case, you’re a permanent resident, not a citizen.

If this staus officially changes between now and matriculation, you need to notify the schools and likely send your citizenship certificate and/or passport.
