Just saw this announcement, which is a couple of weeks old.

Louisiana Tech will be offering what it says is the country's first undergraduate degree in nanosystems engineering this fall.

For more information: http://www.coes.latech.edu/nano/

bump. because this is an FAQ

U of I is trying to get their program going is what I heard from my friend so I hope there are more colleges that will get in on the action b/c that would be sweet.

wow, i wish more schools would offer nano as a major. all the new jobs are gonna center around nanotech, so itd be pretty sweet to major in that, def good to land a high-paying job!

Don't major in nanotechnology if you want a high paying job! Major in a traditional engineering discipline and apply it to nanotech - either mechE or EECS.

I would say in ECE, ChemE, BioE, or MatSE. Nano-products (carbon nanotubes and other things like that) are types of materials but are so small that they can be used for many types of applications like biosensors and other various things.

Folks:

All the new jobs are not going to be in nanotechnology. There still will be plenty of jobs in the traditional fields.

Nanotechnology as it's now discussed, comes into a lot of scientific fields. Partially that is because the field is intentionally loosely defined so that a lot of new small companies (and some large ones)) can all claim to be involved in it, and sound exciting.

Nanotechnology includes any products or technology that work with materials having a dimension of 100 nanometers (10 to the -9 meters) or less, down to the level of individual molecules or even atoms. It extends to fields including small-particle chemical coatings, semiconductor design and manufacturing, nano-emulsions and capsules, tiny robotics, etc. - includes aspects of chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, bioengineering, physics, materials science, electrical engineering, ceramics, and others.
