NASA TSGC SEES Internship (Texas Space Grant Consortium, STEM Enhancement in Earth Science)

I wanted to apply for the TSGC SEES Internship this upcoming year (deadline March 1 2018) and I wanted to know if I have a good chance based on the information listed (if anyone applied before):

The link is: http://www.tsgc.utexas.edu/sees-internship/

  1. Sophomore rank 2/385 in high school in Leander, Texas, GPA 5.5377 (on a 6.0 weighted scale)

  2. Extra curriculars: 1 creative competition in elementary school called Odyssey of the Mind (didn’t really win anything, only participated), Honorable Mention for Noetic Learning Competition(small math competition for grades 2,3,4, and 5, and I ) Learned flute in 7th/8th grade, FTC and FRC Robotics in 9th/10th grade (went to FRC World Championships last season but didn’t win anything)

  3. 1st choice is Aerospace Engineering, 2nd is GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment), 3rd is NASA Image Detective

  4. Subjects that interest me mainly are mathematics, computer science, engineering

  5. Basic career plans: Graduate from UT Austin with a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering (if not any other engineering)

I would basically like to be selected because it would be a big advantage when applying to the Cockrell School of Engineering in UT (I heard it is one of the most competitive schools on the campus). Also it would genuinely be interesting to do STEM research with UT professors.

I am posting this because I heard that the program is “nationally competitive,” with around 40 people getting selected out of more than 500. I would really appreciate it if someone who applied responded before March 1 (application deadline).

Hey guys. I was searching cc for past NASA SEES threads, and I saw you guys discussing your chances for this program in the past. I was wondering if you could look at my post and see how my chances are for getting in the program this July (2018).

Hey @ILikeGoodGrades ! First off, good luck with the application! I was selected for the program in the past, and it definitely is worth it, especially if you have a known mentor working in the field. There were 43 selected from 615-617 applicants when I applied, but don’t let this scare you. Based on my experience and the people I worked with, prior experience is not a major factor when applying. I definitely think they pay more attention to your written essay questions and video. Your great rank and GPA will also help you. Feel free to ask me any questions
