Ok I admit my daughter is at NASS 2 and unlike other "trips" she can get a text or take a call. I am wondering if anyone else heard from their attendee? I have checked out postings that say the kids don't have a chance to call but ok I 'm a mom and well...I admit a bit worried. I know if she is accepted this will become the norm but as for right now what can I say?

Anyone have any news about how things are going...

And yes she did text last night saying things were off to a good start....

I'm a mom, too, but you really don't need to worry. Most of the NASS attendees we've had contact with have a great time there. Also, most come away from it either knowing that USNA is for them, or realizing that it isn't. Either way, the purpose has been served. Even those who come away deciding not to continue the application process have a good time.

Seriously, the only time my daughter was able to call me was for a minute or two on the first night. After that, they were doing all of the scheduled activities, followed by "spirit missions" after lights out. On the last night, I could not wait to hear what she thought of NASS, so I called ~11:30 PM, figuring she would be getting ready for "the rack," but when she answered, she said, "Mom, I have to be on the bulkhead (wall) in two minutes! Gotta go." That was during their mock indoc

Last year I was able to attend the "closing session" when my daughter attended NASS. There was so much energy and enthusiasm in Alumni Hall, it was truly amazing.

I hope yours is having as good a time as mine did last year, and I'm betting that she is.

Last summer the only time I called my parents were when I got to BWI, when I got to my room in Bancroft, and then when I was back at BWI to leave.

Don't worry, she is most likely having the time of her life.

I called my mom every night when I got in bed just to let her know I was alive. If she didn't ask for me to call her each night, I wouldn't have called. I'm sure everything is alright! I'm from Philadelphia and the heat + humidity is RIDICULOUS (98 today)... your daughter is probably extremely tired from the ridiculous heat/humidity of Annapolis. I feel bad for all the session II kids with this insane weather.

The midshipmen who are the squad leaders, make sure that you call home. Regardless if you dropped off, came in airport/bus or drove. And you should have like five minutes at night to call home. It's not like they go around with a bat making sure you fall asleep.

Luv2teach do not worry. She will more than make up for it. If your daughter is anything like mine, she will come home and will not stop talking for about the first day or so and it will be all about what she did and everything that took place.

The funny thing was she told me that one of her cadre told her that when they went through Summer Seminar that when they got home there was no stopping the talking about it. She did not really believe them at first. It was almost through dinner when we realized that I was done and she had only taken about 2-3 bites that she had not stopped talking the whole time since getting off the plane. She got a good laugh because she had to relate the story.

The memories are still with her today. She still keeps in touch with many of the cadre from that summer. After finishing a year at NAPS, she is now a Plebe-to-be and those cadre from NASS will be the firsties this year. She could not ask for anything else.

My son is one of the detailers at NASS. All must be well. I know he's exhausted. (Believe he's a squad leader this go-round...) He's up an hour or two before your little darlings, and up an hour or two after they've hit the rack. He said they're all a good group. Weather has been horribly hot/humid. (Not sure if they're black flag days or not... Haven't really worried about it.) Just two years ago he was at NASS as a participant. So, while the attendees are learning about USNA, our Youngsters, 2/C and Firsties are also learning more about leadership! Keep posting those photos folks (and let us know where to find them) May be the only way we get to see our own kids in action at NASS! lol (and, tonight's the first call I've had from my son since a week before NASS began... Two calls a month is about the average for what we've had over the past year. More if he's trying to get his airfare booked... None when he's out on a sub...)

This is such a new experience for us....both of my daughters play team sports the one at NASS is a XC runner and a swimmer and she has gone away but this experience is so new I can't just call and check in.

I did not even think about the kids that are working with all the Summer Seminar kids. They must be wiped out I know when I take my students on overnight trips for just 2 days I am up hours before and after and wiped out.....

Thanks for the post and thanks to your son for helping provide this great opportunity for the kids.

I am in Annapolis right now for my brothers wedding and it is hotter than blazes. I think it was pretty close to 100 today and with humidity it felt a lot higher. My brother said that if it was the summer, they would be black flag days, but I don't know what they do at NASS.

Daughter texted last night at nearly midnight

"Night love you guys have to be up at 3"

and so the day begins........seems like it is going to be a long day hope the weather is a bit cooler today should be sea trials and the mock I day .......
