National Achievement Scholarship Program

flvdad I got the same offer from FAMU! haha =D
I know how frustrating it is though alot of high schools don't really care about Nat'nl Achievement b/c not a lot of ppl get it, I'm the only one in my school and I think the only one in the past 2 yrs or so. The I only reason I think they remembered is b/c I pestered the counselors about it like every month since the beginning of like last year (no joke)!
mono that's too bad I'd be so p****ed

Congrats FLVADAD. Still waiting here. Called counselor's office today. Didn't get a call back. If she does not respond tomorrow, I will call NMSC.

Okay, going to eat a little crow now... :-(

Went to the school ready to fire with both barrels, and then... (1) found out they actually knew all along but believed they could not release any information until the media release date because.. (2) D was the school's first student ever to be a semifinalist, and (3) they had been planning and trying to figure out how they wanted to make the presentation, and (4) the principal wanted to to do it himself and they were trying schedule a date, time etc..

The FAMU deal along with my unrelenting follow ups put them in a tough spot. They ended up calling her in and presenting it to her today. She was thrilled, but now I feel kind of bad in assuming they weren't on top of things....(sigh).

So glad you got your information. D talked to counselor today and counselor said she still has not heard anything but that she has e-mailed NMSC. Trying not to jump the gun and call NMSC. I'll probably wait till Friday since patience is one of the virtues I've been extolling to the kids.

226, made semi in both National Achievement and NMSF. Hope it helps!

I'm a Semi-Finalist too! I got a 197.

FredFred and Prince -- congrats to both of you! What schools will you be considering?

A lot of you have probably already seen this, but I found the link below somewhat interesting. It is the 2006 annual report for NMSC. It doesn't show any scores, but provides a lot more detail on the number of semifinalists and the regions they come from. I also found it interesting to see what schools NAF's chose to attend. Looks like Howard is he only HBCU having any real success attracting significant numbers of NAF's -- they had 19. However, the numers heading to some of the Ivys are really impressive --- not surprising, but still impressive.

I'm considering the usual math and science schools. I'm also a bit interested in business. I used to think I knew which school I wanted to go to, but I decided I really don't. That link is interesting, I haven't seen it before, but I assume National Achievement Scholars are the 800 out of 1500 finalists who actually win a monetary scholarship, right?

Yes, you are correct. However, even being a finalist without winning the monetary award will get you a number of large scholarship offers from various schools. There's a couple of lists floating around on some of the other threads.

Hey guys, I just wanted to update for everyone that i did eventually get notification. After we made a little noise the packet mysteriously appeared in the back of one of our guidance counselors mail boxes. ??? Oh well, I got all of my stuff sent out and I'm really happy. 207 was the score i recieved. Thanks for everyones support.

Mono, that's great. Very happy to hear it worked out. :D

Congrats, Mono!

D qualified as a "referred" student, and unfortunately, did not make finalist. Have discovered that this still makes her eligible for the president's scholarship at Texas A&M. Am looking for others that might have scholarships for which "referred" students are eligible.

Texasmama, I might have some suggestions. Will your D be considering schools only in TX, or out of state as well?

Basically, she's considering anything except Miss., Ala., Maine and Vermont.

I got "referred" or " Outstanding participant" too.....
bummer lol

I finally received the info.. so excited!!!

My friend got NASF with a 207 in New York. She was very excited. :)

It was kind of funny because she actually knew I was a National Merit Semi before I did because she saw my packet on the desk when she went down to get her own. Thankfully I didn't see her until after though so I got to find out first hand from the guidance office.

hi. does any one know the cutoff score for national achievement in Va? thanks

D recently got scholarship letters from Nebraska, Arizona and Texas A&M. Nothing much on the East Coast though.
