Does anybody know when to expect the National Achievement Finalist results?

either late january or early feb

Our D was notified today by her school that she was named as a semi-finalist for the National Achievement Scholarship Program. The letter says that the names will be released to the media on September 28th.

I was notified as a semi-finalist today and as stated above, finalists find out in January/February.

What kind of scores are we looking at for National Achievement scholarship semifinialist and finalist? What scores do those of you who have already been notified have?

The qualifying scores usually are, I think, a 190 PSAT or higher for semi-finalist.I think that the main thing that determines finalist is gpa. The students have to have an SAT score, too, that makes it clear that their PSAT score wasn't some kind of fluke, but I've seen students with old SATs of 1250 or so who had gotten Achievement scholarships.

yeah, I agree with NSM. Most national achievement semifinalists don't become finalists because of grades.

My D is working on her finalist essay as we speak. She's decided to focus on leadership and EC's and how she's balanced school and community. She's a good student with solid test scores, but not of the HYPS caliber that some people here say you "have" to have

I was just notified on thursday that I am a semi-finalist.....I hate my counselor!!

Well, congratulations are still in order. Good luck in the next round, and get ready for a ton of mail from colleges if you aren;t already getting it.

oh I am...kinda sux because I already have a definite list.....how comeptitive is it to become a finalist?

Being a finalist isn't too competitive if you have the grades.

How many semifinalists are there and how many become finalists?

When collegeboard releases the achievement semifinalists officially on september 28th, will the semifinalists be receiving alot of mail and contact from colleges?

Does anyone know when the National Hispanic Scholar Recognition Program notification will be comming out? It too is based on PSAT scores.

DiamondT there are 1600 semifinalists and 800 finalists. 700 get the one-time $2500 scholardhip and the rest of the finalists get scholarships through affliated companies.

I've seen evidence that the names of the National Achievement semi-finalists have already been released to colleges since S was personally visited in school last week by a North Carolina Central recruiter who offered him a fabulous scholarship that was clearly only for National Achievement semifinalists and finalists. I think it's called the Eagle scholarship.

S has not gotten the official word yet from his h.s. about his status, but we know that his PSAT score will make him a semifinalist.

In the fall, the semi-finalists get tons of mail, calls, scholarship offers, etc.

In addition to the scholarship offers that occur directly through National Achievement, there are many colleges that offer major merit aid -- full scholarships and more -- to Achievement scholars. University of Florida, American U are just some of the colleges that do this. The easiest way to find out is to use a search engine and key words like "national achievement scholars" and "scholarships". Many colleges that offer fabulous merit aid to Merit scholars do the same for Achievement and Hispanic scholars. Semi-finalists and commended Achievement scholars also may be in line for great merit aid particularly if any merit aid is offered to URMs.

As for National Hispanic info, I don't know. Check the CC archives and you can find out when students heard last year, or post a separate thread asking about it.

National Achievement Commended Students should get something too. They leave those poor, hard working kids out. Northstarmom, what was your son's PSAT score?

Our D received a letter from Clemson offering unsolicited "provisional acceptance" based on info they received from the search service.

Being National Achievement commended does boost student's chances at college admissions and scholarships even if the colleges don't outright say so on their web sites.

S's PSAT index was a 206.

That is good to know... I've read a number of your posts NSM - thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us.
