National Achievement Scholarship Program

I have made one or teo threads about this topic and have been diverted to old threads that didnt answer my questions... So now im asking you...All National Ahievement Scholars who have found their statu this year..post your stats and when you foind out...

Nothing yet. But school just started today in Texas. Have you heard yet?

Nothing for me yet either and school started a week ago. I got a 208 on the PSAT if that helps anything.

Usually the qualifying score for semifinalist is 190 or above on the PSAT. I think you need a 3.5 unweighted to become a finalist, and of course, you'll need to submit SAT scores and the application for finalist that your school should give you. Sons made semi-finalist with 206 PSAT scores, but their grades -- 3.0 and under unweighted weren't good enough even though their SAT scores were 98th and 99th percentile.

I found out today and I got a 205.

I got a 207 and haven't heard anything yet, however the national merit kids found out yesterday. Should I be concerned?

bump bump bump

found out Aug, 24 I got a 205

i found out aug. 28. i got a 199

Whats the difference between National Achievement Scholarship Program and National Merit? I got National Merit, will I also get National Achievement? I've never heard of this.

it's only for African American students so don't worry about it.

oh ok, never mind.

Ok now I'm a little upset since both bebegirl and floridastudent (I'm assuming) are from Florida...which is where I'm from. I can't see how my guidance counselors would let the national merit kids know and not the national achievement kids.

mono17200
just ask
my guidance counselors are really on top of things like that b/c my school is big on honors and awards but some schools aren't so you'll just have to check, maybe your gc just doesn't have it yet (national achievement letters came 2 days after nat'nl merit at my school)
don't worry you got it. =)

Thank you for the reassuring words Floridastudent, however my fears were realized today when I went to discuss the situation with my guidance counselors. Apparently they completely forgot about National Achievement and they cant recall if they sent the information for the students that qualified back to NMSC. As we sat in the office, they pulled out a letter from NMSC with a list of names (including mine) who qualified for the scholarship. The letter requested that they return it by last April with all of our information...and our guidance counselors just can't remember if they ever did it. So we are now in a bit of a quandary as my counselors scramble make this right (but they probably wont be able to.) I cant convey how upset I am right now, there is a lot of prestige that comes with National Achievement...

mono,
I hope things work out for you. There's not just prestige, there's also money that can come with a National Achievement designation even if one is just a semifinalist.

I scored a 184. I live in Nevada. This means I am at least commended, right? What kind of notification am I supposed to get and from whom? I just talked to my counselor today and he said that the school has only received word regarding National Merit standings. Does this mean I didn't get it?

My D scored a 195 and we are also in FL. She was called into guidance last April to confirm her participation so I think her school did respond to NMSF. However, we have also not heard anything from NMSF and neither has her GC.

Oddly enough, last week an admissions rep from FAMU showed up unexpectedly at school and proceeded to offer her a full ride. He told her she would likely get more offers from other schools soon, but they wanted to be the first. I thought the whole thing seemd a little strange so I called FAMU to confirm. They said the offer was legitimate and was based on the PSAT and veriication of GPA, class rank, etc. They also said the scholarship would be upgraded to include summer travel if she got at least a 1300 on her SAT.

Obviously, we are happy she got a nice scholarship offer, but we don't know if its related to the National Achievement Program since we have not heard anything --- but we are hoping so crosses fingers

Called NMSF and just found out my D is a semifinalist! I was told they mailed out the notifications and packets to her school on 8/24!!!

I am unhappy to know the guidance office wasted no time to announce and get out all of the info about the Merit Semifinalist, while my D has been unnecessarily sitting around in limbo for weeks. If not for an unexpected visit from the FAMU rep offering a scholarship we would not have even thought or known to follow up on any of this --the deadline would have probably just passed us by. Situations like this is the reason I can't emphasize enough the need for parents and students to be extremely proactive with school administratrators. This is just one instance among many over the years where my kids would have potentially gotten the shaft if we weren't dedicated to following up on the details.

My suggestion to those who have not heard anything is to call NMSF directly asap. It only took them two minutes to tell us. Of course, now begins the hunt for the missing packet/application that the GC's have insisted they know nothing about. If they can't find it NMSF says the only way we can get another one is for the school request to request it directly.

Hope this helps, and good luck to all who are still waiting to hear.

We heard "commended" from the school some time last school year, but now I am curious about the PSAT score cutt offs. Is there any way to find that out?
