Sorry to be posting this here, but no one seemed to be able to help me on the SAT/ACT board. When will I know if I qualified for either national achievement or national achievement commended? Many of the national hispanics seemed to be getting their letters in the mail and I was wondering if national achievement worked in a similar way.

Maybe you could email the National Merit Corporation (I think that's the correct name) and ask when they will be sending letters for National Achievement scholars.

calling is even more effective. The representative should be able to look up your name right away.

You'll find out if you're a semi-finalist in Sept. or Oct.

If your score is 190 or higher, you should make semi-finalist. I have never seen the National Achievement organization reveal that info, but from what I have seen on-line, this is the approximate cutoff.

I am guessing Achievement commended's cutoff might be around 175-180.

@Northstarmom: It varies by state. 190 is rather low for a cutoff. 220 is the Massachusetts semi-finalist line. 202 is the commended line, last time I checked.

Original poster: Try searching the CC archives, if you haven't yet.

you might check with your GC. I spoke to the NM folks on Friday, and was told that all "high scorer" letters for 2004 psat were sent to schools on April 11 in individual envelopes; I confirmed that our HS has the letters, but has not yet mailed them out. (Cutoff of NM high scorers is 200 again.) However, I did not specifically inquire about the Achievement awards, so not sure if they go to the schools also.

My son was commended, but not a semi. His index was above 200. It varies by state.

His letter says he is one of 4,600 who placed in the top 5%. His school didn't give him the letter until mid-Nov of Senior Year (well past ED admission app deadline).....so, I guess you might not see it anytime soon.

I assume you meant 46,000. :)

Quite frankly, I can't understand HS GC's that just sit on these letters, (nor do I understand why the CB/NMQ group just doesn't mail the psat scores and high scorer letters directly to a kid's house), with a copy to the HS.

Celebrian and Northstarmom are speaking about the National Achievement award, not National Merit. It is also based on the PSAT scores, but it targets minorities. State cutoffs do not apply.
