Hey guys! I posted this somewhere else too, but I think it was in the wrong place. Has anyone ever participated in the National Brain Bee or is competing this year?? Any past competitors have any advice to give? Especially about the brain practical or the MRI interpretations? Thanks in advance :)

My son did this about a week ago. Unfortunately his school found out about it with a week and a half to train. I think if they send a team next year they will do really well. Anyway they started out with four rooms with 20 kids each. They mixed up the kids from diff schools in these rooms. They were asked questions and given 30 seconds to answer. After three incorrect questions they were eliminated. Then the last standing 5 from each room went on to the final round to determine the winner. So basically they work their way to the best students then finish the contest. The questions are all straight out of the primer so it is a very do-able competition. They have a set list of questions from the Brain Bee and each room had the same questions. There were a surprising amount on the spinal column so be ready for that, lots of basic ones like how much the brain weighs. I would say just memorize as much as you can from the primer. We also found some flash cards and a study guide online, but couldn’t tell you where anymore. We just searched Brain Bee and found some info. Oh - and know the anatomy of the brain as completely as you can and any acronyms in the text. There were a few acronyms that people didn’t know what they stood for. Good luck!!

thanks for your reply! I won in the regional bee and was looking for some info about what comes after that:) The nationals study guidelines are really pretty vague and I don’t know what to do! Will your son be going on to nationals? And if so, how is he studying for neurohistology?? I have no idea what to do…

Congrats on winning the regional. Like I said my son only had a week and half to prepare so they didn’t make it to the end, but did pretty well considering. Maybe you can google previous winners names and try to contact them. I would say that at least you know every single question is contained in that primer so do your best to remember the whole primer! Good luck to you!!
