National Buckeye Scholarship

Have any out of staters heard about the Buckeye Scholarship? Son was accepted 11/18 but we haven’t heard yet.

No. The last three years they were notifying about the national buckeye and the trustee, Provost and Maximus merit aid for OOS starting in mid December. The money ran out and many qualified accepted OOS applicants who applied by the November 1 Early Action deadline did not receive the Buckeye and other scholarships. So for this admissions cycle Ohio State raised the criteria threshold scores for both the ACT and SAT and also increased the class rank requirement to make it more difficult obtain --or --another way of looking at it—to ensure they have enough funds to be able to give the merit aid to all of the highest stat applicants who can raise their admissions profile, which leads to higher ranking in USNewsWorld Report and other publications. I think this year they are waiting till the entire applicant pool who applied Early Action has been evaluated–should be done by January 15 before they start releasing scholarships. And my guess is that this year mostly all who meet the higher scholarship thresholds for standardized test scores and class rank will receive the scholarships. My daughter is included in this so I am hoping as well!

@ac2680 I called the Office of Admissions back in November (regarding my daughter who was accepted Engineering first wave). I asked about the status on the National Buckeye Scholarship and when they expect to be snail mailed (if not this week based on previous years). She put me on hold, inquired, and stated that they will not be notifying OOS about the National Buckeye until end-of-January to end-of-February! Also, notifying accepted students on merit scholarships will most likely not be starting until mid-January! Unlike previous years. She realizes that and mentioned that they have changed their structure. My daughter was hoping to have her decision by end of year.

They are just now starting to release National Buckeye Scholarships. It will be until late Feb to early March when all are notified

@nasteeR how do you know they are releasing them

Letters for the National Buckeye ($12,500) and Maximus ($5,000) merit aid scholarships for outofstate students were sent on Friday and some students have received letters today. I expect that this first wave is the buckeye/Maximus combo and then then the next wave in about two weeks will be the Buckeye/Provost and then followed by the buckeye/trustee. The criteria for these scholarships is on the website --here is a link http://undergrad.osu.edu/cost-and-aid/merit-based-scholarships

Are instate kids eligible this year for Buckeye?. I know the website says “only out of state” , but have heard one kid (My son friends distance connection) stating he got a letter.! (Contrary to the web link). Any other instate students got ‘National Buckeye’?

Buckeye is an out of state only scholarship. There are other scholarships (e.g., Maximus) that both in and out of state applicants are eligible for. Perhaps your sons friend got on of those other ones.

@trackmbe3 how do you know this?

@chillwestchesmom my daughter -from outofstate–received the letter in the mail on Monday–for both the national buckeye and Maximus. if you look at a few of the other threads you will see that other students have received the letter as well. However, the letter for the National Buckeye and provost combo have not gone out yet. Nor has the letter for the National Buckeye and Trustee. Ohio state usually staggers the sending of those groupings of scholarships every two weeks. That’s how it has been at least for the last two years on this thread. They start with the highest combo ($17,500) and work down to the lesser combo (buckeye and Provost st $15,000) and then the national buckeye and trustee at ($14,000), which is still a great scholarship. Ohio State is one of the few higher ranked schools (#54 in USNewsWR) that offers a good amount of merit aid to high stat applicants, making the cost almost equivalent to the in-state Colleges of these outofstate applicants.

OOS son got the Buckeye and Maximus yesterday.

I really hope they are still going to be sending out more of the highest awards. My son received Buckeye and Maximus last year and my daughters stats are better than his and we haven’t heard yet.

@trackmbe3 Exactly! Assuming I get the scholarships that I am eligible for, the cost of attending OSU will be nearly identical to attending my state school UVA!

Congrats to everyone who has received merit!! As people continue to post, could you please try to include when you were notified of admission as well? thank you!

Do you mind sharing her stats that got her this’d great award?

Thanks for the info here. My son just received an e-mail on acceptance to Honors and we are waiting to hear on the OOS scholarships. He has about a dozen other schools he applied to EA and from those schools he generally received his admission and scholarship offers concurrently, in some cases the scholarships came a couple of weeks later. Waiting with fingers crossed to hear from OSU to see where they fit…

They have a new strategy this year. Regarding the merit scholarships, review the EA potential scholarship potential with the FAFSA concurrently. Give the scholarships to those who need the financial support, not necessarily the merit? As an OOS we have been waiting and hearing different eta’s since December (phone and email)? Someone from OSU please explain all of this?

Following up to my previous post. I am just theorizing and trying to understand.

Two years ago, my son did not receive his merit until mid-February although acceptance came in November and Scholars in January. This year my daughter’s process seems to be on same track. Though no guarantee with merit; just hoping. I do not think they review merit in the same context as FASFA aid. Keeping fingers crossed all who are waiting, are rewarded!

@researchQ This makes me feel better. My son is on the same track – accepted in November, Scholars in January. Hoping for these scholarships to come through as OSU is where he really wants to go.
