National Championship

Hey, guys, I'm curious about how highly a national championship in an individual sport is looked upon. I won the national powerlifting championships this year at the Junior Olympics in Detroit. Is a championship like this a good "hook"?

Yes. it is definitely an attention grabber and shows you dedicated yourself to a goal.

*Hook *probably isn’t the right term to use. A hook is usually something that addresses an institutional want or need of the college or university. If you were a national champion in, say tennis, that would benefit the college because the college has a tennis team. (And presumably they’d like it to be competitive.)

But do a lot of colleges have competitive weightlifting? Do any?

It’s a good extracurricular accomplishment. You should certainly list it on your college applications. But it’s not going to vault you over the competition the way being able to dunk a basketball would.
