I know there have been many threads about this already, but this is kind of different from the stuff other people have been posting:
I play table tennis, competitively. Most of you probably know of it as “pingpong”. I train almost every day, I take lessons weekly with a former Olympian and many time US champion, and I am very dedicated and hardworking. I am also nationally ranked for my age. Recently, I went to the Junior Olympics, in which I won silver in the singles and doubles event, and gold in the teams event, all for my age group. Again, most of you probably don’t know what I’m talking about when I say that. In any case, that is a fairly significant accomplishment in the table tennis world, but to what extent will it help me for top schools (ivies). Does it qualify as a hook?

It sounds like a hook to me. National recognition is a big hook. Have you looked into colleges that have table tennis teams. For all I personally know, Yale may be the #1 school in the nation for table tennis. (Hopkins' sport is lacrosse, and they care about it a lot.)

Thanks for the response. As of now, Texas-Wesleyan is the top table tennis school in the country. By that, I mean the strongest table tennis team. Princeton looks promising, however, as 2 top juniors will be there this year.

I think it's a hook, but you should really write about it in an essay, since it's very special. But I don't think it's the same as any other sport because a lot of schools don't recruit for it.
