Are Dominicans (from the Dominican Republic) considered an URM?

Am i at a complete disadvantage now because i just found out that another girl from my school is doing QB too (a good friend of mine)? She is also Dominican and has better grades than i do, but with a less rigorous corse load and her parents make like 3 times what my parents do…

I love her to death and im wishing her the best of luck, but it’s making me totally depressed lol

You are a QB finalist, and have ranked 3 colleges for college match.

1) Yale
2) Princeton
3) Swarthmore

You are rejected by Yale, but accepted by Princeton and Swarthmore. Princeton is non-binding, but Swarthmore is binding. Would you be forced to go to Swarthmore if you reject Princeton?

I don’t think that would happen because you only get matched to one school. If you match Princeton, then you don’t even find out about Swarthmore. Since Princeton is higher on your list, you would get matched to Princeton only, and if you still wanted to see if you can get into Swarthmore you would have to go RD.

^ I think (not sure) but you are only matched with 1 school - so if you are matched w/Princeton (#2) although it is non-binding - you will not know if #3 Swarthmore matched you and would have to apply Reg. Dec. to Swarthmore - if Swathmore accepts you Reg. Dec. - you would have to the end of date to accept either Princeton or Swarthmore.

@Ju_liaa - RU applying as an International or do you have U.S. citizenship?
Dominican Reopublic = Isle of Hispanola = Hispanic = URM???

What’s a poor ordinary white guy from a good ‘neighborhood’ to do for a ‘hook’ here! LOL! Oh Yeah - (I forgot) - see beginning of thread - I’m amazing!!! (We ALL are - right?)

By the way - What does ORM stand for?? didn’t find it on the ‘list’…

Leaving tomorrow - will catch up when I get back next week.

@GetToCollege: Pretty sure ORM stands for Over Represented Minority. Also, I’m a permanent resident so i guess I’m not international or citizen.

Could more people give my last question a go about another female form my school of the same nationality and with better grades doing QB? Don’t hold back, i can take it XD

@Ju_liaa: You’ll be fine. The fact that she makes 3x as much as you makes a difference right there. I’m pretty positive that the DR nationality is considered Hispanic for most purposes; read the history of the nation and you’ll see it is pretty evident. Last round, two people from my school recieved QB Match scholarships, and I’m pretty sure they were the only ones who applied. And yes, if you get matched to a non-binding school, you can forward your app for the RD round. Essentially, you’re just finding out early that you got in to a particular school, and you can compare them all and choose by May.

@GetToCollege: Over-represented minority. You put it perfectly: every QB applicant is special in their own way (que Barney song). QB was created for the most under represented minority of all: the lower income bracket.

got another english/teacher rec question…is debate considered a real english class by everyone else’s standards? I like my debate teacher much better than the brit lit guy. We’ve been doing a ton of writing in the debate class, real personal stuff, so this teacher/coach already knows me quite well and I’m probably going to join the team.

Ok help. My school gives out GPA on a hundred point scale.
Let’s say that weighted is a 90 and unweighted is an 88, do i convert this to 4.0 and 5.0 using their chart? That would make it a 3.3 and a 4.7 (which QB says is impossible) or do i make an inequality (4.0 x 88/ 100)? That would make it 3.5 and 4.5 (which QB accepts).

I know that the second makes sense therefore i should go with that, but is that really the way you do it or am i way off?

I personally don’t think either sounds correct. You should e-mail them to ask. If you put it down incorrectly it might appear as if you are trying to pad your GPA.

What is a good time to ask our teachers to finish their recommendations by? Is the website completely flooded during the last week before September 30?

hey all, I have a question about entering your GPA. So, the deal is, my school ONLY gives out number grades out of 100. We don’t to letters (A,B,C) or grades on a 4.0 scale. SO my average for 3 years is 98/100…is this equivalent to a 4.0? because it shows on QB that anything over 95/100 is a 4.0…it just doesn’t seem right.

BTW…is anyone else here, NOT a minority? If you are not a minority, then what did you put on the ethnicity thing?

hey, one more question…I won’t be able to contact my teachers until Sept. 9th about recommendations, does anyone think thats still enough time? I’ve called and emailed for about a month, and no answer.

@xctf: I just asked the exact same thing about GPA directly above you! XD
My advice is to go over to your school anyways because at least your councelors should be over there by now. I just had 2 meetings with mine last week. Also, i’ve only spoken to my councelor and one other teacher about recs and given them all the QB info, but i have to wait till the 10th for the last teacher. Anyways i’m giving those two till the first day of school until i really start stalking them XD

@lsjny09: Debate is not considered a core class usually, but if it is at your school I don’t really see anything stopping you. If you think you’ll recieve a serious recommendation from him I would go for it. If you’re still in doubt, just talk to QB. @Ju_liaa: Talk to QB; they won’t bite, and you don’t want to hurt your application in any way. They should get back to you within a couple days.
