National College Match - 2009-2010

@yourxlover: It would help in that it shows that you qualify for a somewhat prestigious award; you are now part of a select group of students. It ranks you.
That means you can become a finalist but your application won’t be forwarded to colleges for the match round. I don’t think it matters quite as much if you’re an international Asian, and it doesn’t matter as much with QB anyways.

@alexandrafitzmor
meaning that i can just apply for the scholarship to try for the award but if i’m awarded i won’t be matched t colleges? (ie doesn’t help college applications?)

(: thanks for the prompt response!

Hey so which test do you guys think I should take in October? Math2 or the SAT? Here’s what I have right now:

Subject Tests
French (w/o listening): 800
Math 1: 750
US History: 730

SAT
Math: 740
CR: 670
W: 670 (10 essay)

I think I could bring the SAT up to 2250+, and for Math2 I think I could hit 800. Which would be more beneficial? (And then I would take the other one in November for RD, so either way I’ll have both I guess) thanks

Hey Guys -
Pomona is on my short list and I really would like to visit.

From Questbridge Prep Scholarship, or otherwise, has anyone (inquired/applied/been offerred?) ‘placed’ at the Pomona Fall Weekend?

(I thnk that’s what it’s called at Pomona instead of ‘Diversity Weekend’?)

I requested a ‘place’ but have not heard anything…I think there were 2 dates - Oct. and Nov.

Anyone???

FYI = I’m through with my apps - just waiting for teachers recs. to push ‘submit’… School hasn’t started - but I’m in for NMSF! Hooray!

^^FWIW and IMHO -
Oct. - Re-take the SAT and try to bring it up to (Super Score = 2200 - (I think that’s about the minimum for the Ivies…unless there’s VERY special other stuff on your app.)

Take Math 2 in Nov. and get 800 (not too hard, even I did it! HA!)

I have to take Chem. in Oct. to have a Science for MIT - otherwise my Stats are OK.
(If I mess up Chem. - I’m fnished for MIT :frowning:

RU visiting Amherst??

nope i’m not visiting amherst. are you?

and good luck with the chem! I was going to self-study biology to take in October for MIT, but I realized it wasn’t going to happen. and thanks for the advice of taking the SAT in october, i think that makes sense. math2 will be a good boost but SAT 2200+ is more important for stanford etc, i guess

^Yeah - I’m up for it, although for now I like the large U’s better ----we’ll see…

and…
Anyone up for Pomona Fall Weekend Visit??

and…
Where are all the QB Prep winners?? Hiding until Oct. 23??
I thought I’d see some familiar names posting here??

@GetToCollege/Flying: I went to see Amherst a few days ago with a friend and it was sweet! Beautiful campus, awesome 5 college consortium (adds up to 6,000 classes total at your disposal), and really fun loving people. It was a great place.

I heard about Ivy Leagues accepting people who has certain SAT score above some minimum and those with great stats.

However, let’s assume that your stats don’t stand out (as in, they’re at the minimum), but you do good extracurriculars and leaderships. Will this help?

How will they factor in financial hardships to the student and the race of the student (they can only have so many percentages of certain races…

@yourxlover: I’m feeling you on the whole Asian -500 points thing. Although if you’re applying through Questbridge, it will allow them to see beyond the race–I hope–in terms of the application setting you apart and everything from the other applicants. At least, I’m crossing my fingers. Because if I’m compared across the nation with my Asian counterparts, I’m not the 2400 SAT violin-playing math Asian that colleges seem to love. Instead, I’m the English/Science Debate Asian who likes to draw and write music with minimum SAT line for ivy leagues. Hm.

I didn’t get the Williams on Williams free fly in thingy

^ Re: WOW - :frowning:
You’re West Coast and want to visit East Coast?
Me - the opposite
I’m hoping Pomona will come thru for me…

School is on after this weekend…Will teachers get their recs. in SOON? When should I start ‘pushing’ ?

I want to push SUBMIT days befre deadline!!

Cyrstal91 -
How many minus points for an ordinary ‘smart’ white guy, poor, no $$, good talent & leadership but NOT in (hopeful) major field, kinda high middle class neighborhood, very competative school, (lots of Ivy hopefuls) ?

Disadvataged by ‘reverse discrimination’ ?? (ORM?)

Reading & looking at last year’s QB stories = Scary = very few look like me - so maybe we’re on an even playig field here???

Thanks Ju_liaa - that’s what I’ve been reading…

@GetToCollege: is there a particular reason you want to push the submit button days before the deadline?

Or is there an advantage to Questbridge getting your application early? (I’m just really new to these kind of things)

^ - No advantage - Just want to be DONE - —and to avoid possible internet ‘log jam’.

and…I’ve a heavy Sr. year and need to concentrate on getting/keeping up good grades - self-prep for Oct. Chem. SAT 2 - all in-between working for needed $$ - and sometimes I need to catch some ZZ’s…

Same here. Working/babysitting/SAT/study/friendship duties. Maybe I"ll just skip the sleep or something.

Anyway, even if you get the Questbridge application done, many schools still require that you complete the common application and supplements. So more essays and teacher recs.

^^^^^^

Not to put a damper on things, but you should go ahead and start filling out FA forms as well, as much as you can at this point. :)

I’m not sure if anyone has already mentioned this, but last year the QB site had some significant “issues” right when everyone was trying to click “submit”–so, even though it’s tempting to wait until the last minute, that may not be the smartest thing to do.

Is faxing the only method of sending over our transcripts and score reports? How do I get hard copies of SAT score reports?

Hey guys just a general question here on all the stuff we need to send in.

FAFSA
CSS
Transcript
SAT scores
Recs

So far i’m clear that we have to send all of this for FINALIST consideration. Am i missing anything?

^all of that has to be in before sept 30tth??? even the FAFSA and CSS???
