Fordham University in NY. Unless they are being intentionally misleading, their letter says all hispanic scholars get full tuition scholarship.
And we got a bunch of the BS letters saying "Congrats, apply to our school".

Wait, toughquestions, Fordham University really offers a full tuition scholarship automatically to all hispanic scholars?

According to their website, Fordham offers 20 scholarships to the top finalists and semifinalists of the NM, NA and NHRP competitions. One would need good stats to compete, because they enroll more than 20 NMFs a year. That's very different from the offer that toughquestions is reporting.

Who is eligible?
Nominees are freshmen graduating from high school in the top 1% of their class, or semifinalists in the National Merit, National Achievement or Hispanic Recognition competitions who are also in the top 10% of their class. Jesuit Scholarship recipients must also be Jesuit high school graduates.

On what basis are awards granted?
Excellent Academic Achievement in high school, test scores, personal characteristics. Presidential and Jesuit Scholarships are awarded to the top 20 applicants each year.

What is the range of the awards?
Full tuition less N.Y.S. Scholarship, Tap, Pell and one-half of aid received from all other sources. Presidential and Jesuit awards also include room (excluding board and fees). Student must maintain a 'full-time' status.

For how long is the award given?
These are four year scholarships requiring reapplication for renewal. It may be renewed for up to eight academic year semesters (fall and spring) as long as 'full-time' status and a minimum GPA of 3.0 is maintained. The FAFSA and TAP application (NY Residents only) must be completed each year.

There are other generous scholarships on the same webpage.

I quote from the letter Fordham sent:
"As a NHRP Scholar, we are able to consider you for our Semifinalist Scholarship should you apply for admission. This four year, full tuition scholarship is awarded to those scholars offered admission to Fordham who are also in the top ten percent of their high school class."
I can read English.
This is NOT a MAYBE. IT says IF you apply for admission, are accepted and are in the top 10% the full tuition scholarship IS awarded to you.
Any other interpretation is simply a deception.

The word "consider" is what makes me wonder. Does it really mean that if they admit 63 NHRP scholars that are in the top 10% of their class they will all get the full tuition scholarship? Or will they be considered for it. It deserves a call to Fordham.

toughquestions, no offense intended. I was not doubting your report, I was pointing out the discrepancy between what was written on their website (which by the way I missed in my original search) and what you had seen in their letter.

In my opinion, the wording on your letter is very strong (without being a 100% guarantee.) I think they mean they WILL award this to ALL NHRPS who are also on the top of their class, but reserve their right not to do so on a case by case basis, e.g. in J'adoube's scenario.

SamK, I'm curious about that $9K for University of South Florida...where does that come from? Our letter mentioned possible other scholarships above the tuition award, but it didn't give an amount.

As I said before posting any lists, I used this Google search string:

"National Hispanic" Scholarship site:theschool.edu

Replace theschool with usf in the search string above to search for NHRP scholarships at the University of South Florida:

The second hit is:

Freshman Scholarships - USF Undergraduate Admissions

$36K over 4 years for in-state scholars ($9k/yr). "Recipients may receive this award in addition to Florida Bright Futures."

Out of staters get full tuition.

Aren't there any colleges in New England or the Great Lakes region that offer scholarships for a NHS? Cause my parents are retiring to Michigan and the schools that have offered me full tuition are Westminster College in Salt Lake City and New Mexico State, with the possibility of University of Nebraska coming soon. Anyone?

Some schools in the great lakes region and in the NE with good NHRP scholarships, roughly sorted by scholarship amounts:

Public Schools:
Ball State University (IN) - Full ride
Ohio State U. (OH) - Full instate tuition (plus other scholarships for OOS students.)
Miami University-Oxford (OH) - $10K

Private Schools:
Alma College (MI) - Up to full ride (in-state only?)
University of Evansville (IN) - 75% tuition
Boston U. (MA) - Half tuition
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (MA) - $17K
Rochester Institute of Technology (NY) - $14.5K+
Knox College (IL) - Up to $15K

NHR Scholars are only considered for the Fordham scholarship. That's how I interpret toughquestions letter and the information on Fordhams website.

It looks as though the scholarship amount has been increased at U of A for the 2009-1010 school year to $15,000 (in-state) and $25,000 (out-of-state). We are OOS and I'm thinking that even if the tuition goes up to $20,000, the excess would be enough to cover the lion's share of room and board. Yea!

Anyone considering Ball State? It's the best financial package of the bunch. I just wish they would change their name.

jad1991, I agree. It's definitely the best package out there for NHRP finalists, but the name! Sorry to be so superficial, but jeez! I wouldn't want that to be announced with my name when I'm walking up to get my diploma!

My kid is interested in a wierd major that BallState has so it has moved onto the list.

I know how to read English; any National Hispanic Scholar who gets admitted to Fordham and doesnt get the full tuition scholarship should hire a lawyer!
(And post here so you could get a class action going)

A couple of more guarantees have come in:
Texas A&M waives the out of state portion of tuition and gives a scholarship for half of the instate portion.

Am I the only one posting new offers from this year?
Let's hear from people as soon as you get the letters, guys!
My kids deadlkine for applications is fast approaching and I need to make sure we have them ALL!

I'm actually a National Achievement Semifinalist, but your threads are quite more active than yours so I'll join in the discussion. As far as scholarship offer's I've gotten mail from the following:

U. Alabama-offering full tuition for semifinalist, full ride + laptop+ summer study + 1k personal stipend

Auburn-offering full tuition should I reach finalist

U. South Carolina-offering $6k should I reach finalist

Texas A&M-$2k for semifinalist and around $36k for finalist. [I think it is possible to get another $12k, but I threw the letter away so I'm not quite sure].

Unfortunately I want to attend a small school, so these offers are not of much use to me. I did apply to South Carolina as my safety though.

Hard to Google. Someone here mentioned here it was 193 for IL. I had also heard it was lower. Anyone know for sure?

I don't know the exact number but it seems to be the same for all the states. Maybe you can Google another state.

I applied to Fordham with the free application just because of that handy scholarship I also figured NHRP Scholars get automatically. =) Here's hoping! crosses fingers

Has anybody gotten an award certificate yet? My counselor says he hasn't, but I was just wondering if any schools had gotten them.

If you mean the award certificate from College Board, my D got hers in September.
