Any National Hispanic Scholars out there who will be attending Auburn this fall? My S, HS Class of 2012, is on track to be a National Hispanic Scholar and Auburn will be on his short list for consideration.

Would love to know what kind of yield Auburn is getting on this generous offer. When you visited, how comfortable did you feel on campus?

My S is a National Hispanic Scholar and will likely be attending this fall… He visited a couple of weeks ago and felt really comfortable at the campus. Although he has been accepted to some pretty good schools (UIUC, Purdue, U of Michigan, Berkeley, Cal Poly, UT, A&M, Villanova), it is pretty hard to pass up the generous offer from Auburn. The other schools also offered some Merit Aid but none as generous as Auburn. We have to consider that we have another S who is a year behind and will not be a Hispanic Scholar so if we can get our first a college education at a minimal cost (food and travel) then I think that is the way to go for us… it helps that he liked the college so much

I’ll have him respond when he gets back from El Salvador. He is on a missionary trip for spring break and will be back Sat night. Good luck to your S and congrats.

My D is a National Hispanic Scholar and was accepted to all the schools to which she applied (George Washington University, Southern Methodist, Texas Christian, Arizona State, University of Arizona, and University of New Mexico). She chose Auburn not only because of the generous scholarship offer, but also because she loved how friendly and welcoming the students were when we visited the school this past January.

We’re from a Western state as well (Nevada), and, like you, were concerned that she feel comfortable on campus before enrolling in a school so far away from home. We were pleased and amazed at how welcoming the students were – and not just the student recruiters but the “ordinary” students we struck up conversations with in line at ChikFilA, on the dorm tours, etc.

I definitely think your son should check out Auburn when he begins his college application process next year.

^^^Wow, nice group of acceptances. Can see why your house is now yelling, “War Eagle”! We are visiting Auburn this June. Best wishes to your daughter for a wonderful college career.

Thank you for your kind remarks about the acceptances. I hope this didn’t come across as bragging – was just trying to give the number and range of schools to put the whole Auburn thing into context. This time last year I would have bet you that D would be going to school either in-state or in Arizona or New Mexico. That would have been equally great – I’m just very pleased that she is getting the chance to have a completely different college experience!

I absolutely credit this message board for alerting us to the fact that colleges offer financial incentives to National Hispanic Scholars. If not for that, we might well not have understood the significance of the designation. The knowledge we gained from this board enabled us to broaden the list of schools our D applied to and toured, and helped us make informed decisions. (Entomom is the bomb and so are all the other parents who have taken so much time and effort to post such incredibly helpful information.)

Best of luck to you as well, as you start the process with your son!

Hi! I’m a National Hispanic Scholar this year! I applied to Auburn because of the scholarship and I will most likely be going there in the fall. I visited the campus in January and I absolutely loved it! The people are incredibly friendly, the atmosphere is very welcoming, and it just felt like home.

Like others, I was accepted to many other schools (Emory, Chapel Hill, NYU to name a few) but among the campuses I visited, Auburn was one of my favorites.

I’m going to Camp War Eagle (freshmen orientation) at the end of May.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I’ll be more than willing to answer anything to the best of my ability! War Eagle!

Auburn just revised their scholarships. The full ride scholarship is no longer available to National Hispanic Recognition Scholars. This won’t affect Class of 2011. They also made the other scholarships much harder in terms of SAT scores.

This has been my biggest fear…D1 just finished up her first year on this scholarship, and D2 (HS sophomore) was really hoping she would be able to attend as well.
