National Honor Society? Award or Extracurricular?

I have been researching this question a lot online, but have not been able to find a definitive answer. I was inducted to National Honor Society in the spring, but haven't officially done much with them yet. I'm unclear as to how involved it is, but I've heard there is a very small community service requirement that goes with it. I can provide more information if necessary. Basically, I want to know how it should be listed on the Common App: as an award, or as an extracurricular activity. Any suggestions?

extracurricular

MY school suggests that we list it as an award

The college counselor I met with counted it as an award

award, if you don’t really do anythinhg with it then it’s an award

idk why you’d list it at all tbh

Given the variety of “correct” answers, rest assured (well kinda). NHS isn’t going to WOW anyone so there’s no reason to worry about it.

What is “standard” is to think about it in terms of your school - at mine, you’re inducted, and then it’s never spoken of again - this would be more of an award. At my friend’s school you’re inducted, and then they have group community service commitments once a month, so this would be more of an EC.

Which one do you have more of? If you have more extracurriculars, put it as award, and vice versa.

If you don’t do anything for it, list it as an award. Since the Common App asks how many hours a week/weeks per year you spend on each activity, if you don’t do anything for it (like me) you’ll have to put something like 1 hour a week for 1 week, which doesn’t look good. If you hold a leadership position or you do enough for it that listing the amount of time you spend on it (without lying or exaggerating!) looks decent, then you might consider listing it as an EC.

Thanks everyone! As I mentioned, I’m not completely certain of the commitments for it right now. It’s mostly a group for seniors at my high school, so I’ll start doing more activities with it in the upcoming year. I have it listed as an award right now because I basically have all ten of my activities filled. But I may change it later, we’ll see.

I only have to get 5 hours a year for it so what should I classify it as?

@Phillyy15. Others can chime in if they want. I would probably say award. It doesn’t seem like 5 hours is year is very much at all. How could you even record that in the activities section?

I listed it as an honor, it’s only school recognition… correct?

IMO if you do work as part of the national honor society (ex. tutoring other studetns, holding an officer position etc.) then it would be an EC, if you just got inducted into the group and that’s it, then I’d say it is an award
