Just wondering where to list it...you have to be selected for it (like an honor or award) but I'm also an active member of it (like a club). I'm sure everyone else here is in it so where are you all listing it?

I’m listing it as an extracurricular.
I think NHS is pretty common, even though different schools may have different standards for it. Our NHS is supposed to be pretty selective, but I personally don’t think standards are very high for entrance. So in that sense, I don’t consider it an honor.
However, the actual activity does take up time (we do a good amount of community service, have meetings, etc). Therefore, I consider it an EC.
However, you should probably consider it in context.

Agreeing withnotan, I’ll put it as an extracurricular…its almost given that people applying to good schools would be in these honor societies so don’t stress about it too much…they would know about it anyway

So I never participated in NHS, but I did get inducted into it (got a postcard). What’s the difference?

NuclearPenguins, I’m not sure that was the NHS that inducted you, especially if they simply gave you a postcard.

It would depend on what you do for NHS. Some chapters are very active while others are passive. For passive honor societies, I would list them as honors. For active ones, they can definitely fit into the extracurriculars. Or would it be possible to list them as both?

Yeah, I’ll probably be listing mine as an honor.

I don’t do anything in our NHS, I just paid my dues and then didn’t show up for another meeting. Our NHS is very lax, all you need is 3.5+ UW GPA and you’re in. We inducted like 110 kids out of a 330 kid class. That’s 1/3 of our class. It’s pretty ridiculous.

NHS is something your school selects you for (at my school you had to fill out an application after you were nominated). If you got something in the mail, its something different.

And thanks for the input everyone, I’ll probably keep it as an extracurricular because I’m reasonably involved in it, same with Spanish Honor Society.

Either is fine. Last year I put down NHS as a honor/award.

That’s kind of what I thought too, except I wouldn’t want to list it twice: why waste the space :)?

Ok to clarify, I was sent a postcard by my HS saying I was inducted to NHS, and that there was a dinner/banquet thing I was invited to.

Extracurricular.

If you were on Honor Roll, that would be considered an honor (which I assume you are on, considering you are in NHS).

How would you distinguish the “Honor Society” part in the Activities section?

^ Probably in the description box. I listed NHS as “Volunteer” and put the name in “Details and Accomplishments.”

Induction into an honor society is an honor. Ours is passive, but the inductees are seriously involved in the community and school, these involvements are listed as activities.

For our school 36 were inducted last year, out of 3000 students.
