National Honors Society Question

At my school, nhs is quite prestious. Only 20 out 557 juniors were chosen to be in national honors society (i was one of the 20). however, tons of parents complained, so 20 more kids got added in :( therefore, on my application, i'm gonna say i was one of the original 20 - should i do this? i don't want to get lost in the 40 other kids, bc i'll look worse. good idea or will i not look likable? thanks!

Personally, I don’t think there’s a good way to word that to make it not sound kind of snobby and pretentious. Top colleges are very used to seeing NHS so I don’t think it would particularly matter/impress them. What exactly is the criteria to be chosen? At my school about half the grade is in it since the only reqs are 90+ gpa, 2 teacher endorsements, and 2 clubs every year. However, it seems to be something more exclusive at yours… if it’s something special that got you in, maybe list that.

No, I wouldn’t include that. The fact that you were one of the original 20 probably means that there are other standout things (leadership, ECs, community service, awards) about you as a student that are super impressive which the colleges will see on your application anyway.

I do not believe schools are told how many NHS members there are. It is just listed as an “Honor” or “Award” you write on your application in that category. 20/557 or 40/557 or 150/557, no one will ever know.

wait is NHS an award or activity, I was going to put it down as an activity since I am the president of mine.

It’s an activity, though it serves as little more than an honor at many high schools.
