National Institute of Health Summer Internship

I would just like to give some info about this program and my experience because I think it is one of the best out there and should and more people should do it. First off, it is very selective, I think they told us out of 21000 applicants this year 700 got it country wide. When you get in they match you with a researcher in your field of interest and you basically help them with their research. They will also give you part of their research to do yourself which is incredibly cool. I am currently helping my mentor with her research into new chemo drugs. I'm a junior in high school researching chemo drugs, that's what they let you do. Everyone is so helpful and nice and it is a really nice place to work. In addition to all of that. I just got my own research funded that will be published by the NIH when it's done. They are giving a high school student a shocking amount of money to do their own research. There are lots of kids that get their own funding, it's not just me. This is such a good program and a great experience for anyone that wants to go into scientific research or medicine. You also get to master lab techniques and technologies that most top universities don't have access to, which might give you an advantage in later research. This program was so great and so much fun I recommend it to anyone.

@jtarps I’m interested in applying next summer as a rising senior, but my parents are concerned about the housing. Since I live in NJ, I’ll have to find a place to live there alone. Do you think this will be okay for a teenager? Or should I look for closer/residential programs?

I’m from South Carolina and I’m super interested in this program. I’m a junior this year, and I was wondering about housing. I don’t want to be a social outcast during the internship. Also, the only medical experience I would have is volunteering at a hospital (starting in September) because of a lack of opportunities in my area. Any advice for getting in and housing would be appreciated.

Bump?

I’m from New Jersey and I’m also a Junior in High School. I plan to rent an apartment or maybe try to rent a room in their building?

@jtarps What were your credentials when applying? or like what made you stand out/what previous science experiences did u have. I really want to get accepted to this program but I don’t know that I have enough science related activities even though I love it.
