Are there any National Merit Finalists who listed NU as their 1st choice college by 03/01 who have been selected for one of the NM $2500 awards?

My S listed NU and got the $2500 National Merit award. But, he has not received HPME admittance e-mail as yet, and it appears that he did not get into the HPME program. If he finally does not get into the program, he will change the college name from NU to the one where he decides to go. He has the offer from other accelerated medicine programs, but he prefers HPME and is waiting for the its decision.

I was, which confused me, because I thought the award from NU was supposed to be $2000/year. Not that I’m complaining–any money is fine with me–but what’s the deal here?

I believe National Merit Awards are prestigious awards. Many schools are offering scholarships covering entire expenses (tuition+room+board), if you received the National Merit Award of $2500. My S got a letter yesterday from SUNYSB to this effect.

rtcohen: National Merit gives out a limited number of $2,500 to just a portion (2K?) of the National Merit Finalists. These checks are essentially blank checks and can go to any college.

Northwestern offers $2000 annually to Finalists who indicate Northwestern as their college of attendance/choice (I can’t swear that it is to ALL finalists who attend, but I think so). This is a separate award from the $2,500. You can’t get both.

If I’m wrong, I hope someone corrects me (the NMF stuff is, I think, confusing). I’m just speaking from my son’s 2K annually award, which is given by Northwestern, not by the National Merit folks. It has to be renewed annually and there are a few requirements (full-time, decent standing, etc.).

Will the 2k MNF award lower the grant money or FA package NU’s giving me?

Wait- so you can’t get both? Why not if they’re separate awards? If I decline the $2500, does that mean I automatically can get the NU one if I listed it as my first choice or what?

Wait I have not told them that I am going to Northwestern yet. Can I not receive the award any more?

If you are listed as undecided for NF currently, you can still put NU as your first choice up until april 27 (or around that date)
As long as you make that deadline, I think NU’ll offer you the 2k

the way i understood it when talking to northwestern reps was that you can change your school of choice up through april. a few weeks ago the national merit corporation made me put a first choice, and so i put down yale university. a week ago they sent me a letter saying i got one of the $2500 scholarships and that it is transferable to any college as long as i notify the national merit corporation. today i got rejected from yale, so obviously i’m going to change my choice.

if i decide to go to northwestern, can’t i still get the $2000 in addition to the $2500?

Nope, you can’t. you have to choose only one scholarship. it says so on the finalist package sheet they sent you
