Our principal is very by the book - I want to have DS notified already! So many essays… glad to know at least one can recycle!
He is probably going to have to add a NMF scholarship school to his list. So far, it’s narrowing down pretty easily, since only some have the combination of programs he wants. But that’s another school to add to the visit pile. I thought we were done last month, but we added one more already for this month, and then there is the “NMF” school still to be determined… sigh.
Just in case anyone was wondering, National Merit will begin accepting both confirming SAT and ACT scores for finalist status, beginning with the Class of 2020.
So just venting here…I finally broke down yesterday and emailed the school counselor to ask about the semifinalist materials (I had been assuming we hadn’t heard anything because maybe they preferred to wait until the public announcement date tomorrow). She told me they haven’t received anything, but she’ll check in the office today. Ugh!! I told her my son’s score is well over the state cut off and his score report is marked eligible. What if the school didn’t do their part months ago confirming his status as a student? I guess maybe I would just need to follow up with NM tomorrow? Our school typically gets at least 1 semifinalist a year so it’s not like they’ve never done the process before. I assume it will all get worked out in the end, but I’d like my son to be recognized tomorrow with any others in his school or district. Less stress could be good for senior year…!
@kforty2 - sorry, that is very frustrating. Hope you hear some good news soon. As an aside, it appears at S19’s school the principal received the letters. All information has come through him - both last spring when the commended cut-off was announced and yesterday with NMSF notification (although still no letter given to S19.) Perhaps the principal at your S’s school is in charge of this process as well? Regardless, yes, anything to reduce the stress of senior year would be welcomed.
I once went through the principal’s mail stack with his secretary to look for the NMSF notification letter, while he was out of town. I volunteered at the school a lot so they indulged me, but they also joked about me for months following.
Ha! @vistajay Fortunately it didn’t come to that. I got an email late this morning that it just arrived in the school mail yesterday. Glad to have that cleared up!
Thanks @mountainmomof3! Just got an email from the principal apologizing that she had been slower than usual with getting that info down to the counseling office.
Can a student use the fourth year of NMF funds for graduate level classes towards a Masters Degree? I know a lot of our kids will go in with 30 plus credit hours and graduate in 3 years possibly…
@TXRunningMom I believe it depends on the school. Alabama states their scholarship provides 5 years of tuition that can be used towards undergraduate, graduate or law school.
@TXRunningMom, UTD’s scholarship is for 4 years but will cover Masters classes. They do have many fast track programs that will give you a Master’s degree in 4 years.
