Has anyone ever been offered extra money for being a National Merit commended student? I put it on my app and was curious if it that was possible.

I believe there are some schools that offer scholarships for NMC but I can’t remember which ones. Union College in Nebraska may be one.

There are very few schools that offer scholarships for NMCommended. The reason is that that schools aren’t keeping track of how many NMCs they have at a school, so no reason to recruit them.

You’re much better off getting a high SAT or ACT score and getting merit money that way…you’ll get a LOT more money that way. Seriously.

My daughter’s state U has a bunch of “automatic” partial tuition waiver scholarships based on various combinations of test scores and GPAs. national merit commended and semi finalists are lumped in with one otherwise requiring a certain ACT or SAT score. But I think most people making commended would probably have the ACT or SAT required anyway. (It is not one of the higher scholarships that require ACT scores of 32 or 34, or NMF).

I don’t think so for commended. There are scholarships for Semi-Finalists though. I am a National Merit Commended and a National Achievement Semi-Finalist and I have been offered full scholarships, but only for National Achievement Semi-Finalist
