National Merit cutoff for 2010 class

I think I remember seeing threads about this a while ago, but I can't find them now. Do you guys think it will go up or down in most states? I scored 1 point higher than my state's cutoff last year; how often does the cutoff go up by 2 or more points from one year to the next?

It usually doesn’t go up by more than 2 points or so I don’t think.

Do we get to know the cutoff soon?? I remember seeing something about April.

The cutoff won’t be known until September. But in April, the 50,000 highest scores nationally will be notified that they can have their PSAT scores sent to 2 colleges of their choice for free. Then in early September, 16,000 of them are notified that they are semifinalists, and the other 34,000 are notified in late September that they got commended status.

This information is from the PSAT booklet and the National Merit website. I think you can find it by searching for “steps in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Competition”.

Good luck!

I’m in Pennsylvania and got a 223. Any feedback on how that should do?

Wow! Penn has been 213 and 214 in the last 2 years I think, so you should be set! Way to go!

So sometime this month we should be finding out if we are in the top 50,000?

Yes, my D’s school passed out the letters today.

Oh awesome. So I guess we should all be hearing about them soon!
I hope the adminstration doesnt take FOREVER to pass them out. I almost died waiting for them to give us our PSAT scores.

"But in April, the 50,000 highest scores nationally will be notified "
See new thread for PSAT taken in October 2008

New thread: “PSAT Scores for National Merit Semifinalists 2009 (H.S. Class of 2010)”

If I live in one state and go to school in another, which cutoff scores would apply to me?

im pretty sure where you live counts, as long as you put your state on the info sheet when you took the PSAT

Thanks! That really helped.

where can I find out the cutoffs for VA?

Thanks.
