National merit finalist and engineering scholarship help

Need help to make sure we’ve got everything covered for son to receive his National Merit Package, as well as his Engineering Scholarship package.

Just got a voicemail message saying Bama had not yet received a copy of our Finalist letter or certificate.

We did not know we needed to do this!

Of course, I immediately faxed both over to the fax number that they left.

We did send in the college choice card to National Merit, indicating Bama as the first choice, last week, and I called and confirmed that they received it when we got back from CBHP interview.

Son still has not received any word about an engineering scholarship, either.

I checked the Financial Aid section on his myBama page, and no awards were noted.

Is there anything I’m forgetting to send in, and what number and person should I call to talk to about confirming everything is sent in on time and correctly?

Thank you so much for any help you can give us.

Scholarships will not be officially awarded until mid to late March.

We got that phone message last night too; I’ll be taking care of that later today.

This must be new. We didn’t have to do that.

Montegut…your son should have rec’d his engineering scholarship by now. Must be an oversight…

Be sure to mention that your son applied on time (prior to Dec 1st.)

Thanks for the help, guys. All set. Seems we’ll get a package mid March with everything, which you accept or decline. Looks like we’re good to go!

Is that what engineering said? That’s odd, because others got theirs last fall.

Oh, yes, they did have record that he got the engineering in October. Sorry I didn’t mention that. I just meant that the package we’ll get in a few weeks will have everything in it, national merit, engineering, whatever other goodie they might throw in there!

Oh good! Glad to hear that. I guess the official notification of the engineering scholarship must have fallen thru the crack. :)

So…your son should get…

The NMF - tuition, housing, etc
engineering $2500
corporate NMF (is that $2500 each year, too?)

I’m sure it fell through my crack, not Bama’s. Got a tub of important papers that it’s probably in.

Don’t know about the corporate yet. Should hear soon, though.

Everybody at dad’s work is so proud of son. They even mentioned he was up for it at the weekly meeting. First one from the project to be up for consideration.

Hey, Montegut, I was diving frantically into our pile of papers looking for the NMF certificate until D2 told me that her high school still has it and wants to give it to all the finalists at graduation. We just faxed the letter that D2 received so I hope that’s ok. You know you have to wonder why there isn’t just a published national list of NMF winners so all the schools could cross-reference this on their own??? Good luck to everyone.

Wondering what the GPA requirements are for the different scholarships.

If one gets the national merit finalist package, what is the required GPA to keep that scholarship?

If one gets the engineering scholarship for majoring in engineering, is there a different GPA required for that scholarship or is it the same?

As engineering is a very demanding major, wonder if a student could possibly lose the engineering scholarship but still keep the national merit scholarship if they do not meet the GPA requirements.

If a student is part of any of the honors programs, whether it’s university honors program, international honors proram, computer based honors program , or university fellows program, are those courses given higher point numbers for grades to help those students’ GPA?

According to the honors college page, all University Honors students must maintain a 3.3 GPA. International and computer-based honors students must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

My son said that no honors class received a special weight for GPA purposes.

Honors classes are not weighted. I don’t know of any college that weights honors classes, but perhaps there are some that I don’t know about.

I have not been able to find anything on the website that says what GPA is needed to keep scholarships. SEA_Tide said it is 3.0, but I can’t find that.

After searching the website, I cannot find any info about a minimum GPA. Engineering is a difficult major, but I’m pretty sure the minimum GPA is the same as it is the university itself that is giving the NMF scholarship. I don’t know about the engineering scholarship, but I’m betting it’s the same. What would be interesting to know is what percentage of engineering students lose their scholarship(s) due to low grades.

My son has the engineering scholarship and I don’t remember receiving any paperwork stating a GPA that is needed to be maintained. I’m not sure there is one. If one wasn’t stated, then there really can’t be one. I’ve never heard of anyone losing their engineering scholarship, so maybe there isn’t a minimum.

edited to add…I just found my son’s engineering scholarship certificate and no minimum is stated.

There’s a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 for all scholarships, according to Ms. Jami Gates(head of recruitment I believe for the Honors College) when we met two weeks ago. So just staying in the Honors College will be sufficient to keep your scholarships.
