National Merit Finalist letter received ... please need help.

Georgia Tech will no longer give any National Merit scholarships - the funds are being used for need based scholarships only :(

My son got a 234 on his PSAT this year(he is a Junior) will this score put him in the running for NMF next year? We are getting tons of stuff already???

ZBD…Congrats to your S on an incredible PSAT score!!

Yes, 234 will basically guarantee him NMSF status in September and then he/his high school will have a Finalist package they will need to submit for him to advance to Finalist. If he hasn’t already, he will need to take the SAT and achieve a “confirming” score and have that score sent to NMSC as part of the package.

Other than the SAT score, there isn’t much you/he can do now except wait for the official NMSF notification to arrive at his HS in September. In the meantime, you should read through the stickied thread at the top of the NM forum regarding FAQs for the NM process. It will probably answer most if not all of the questions you may have.

Congrats! As Wolverine86 mentioned, 234 is a lock for NMSF status. I would say, that there are a few things you and he can do to help the NMF process. 1) Avoid any grades worse than a ‘B’. 2) Make sure his relationship with the faculty and administration at HS are good enough to get a great recommendation 3) Educate yourselves on all of the options…and the ‘stuff’ will keep coming for at least a year.
