Dd's counselor called NM and was told 4 letter grades B- and below caused one to be rejected. Oh well, thanks to the jerk algebra teacher she had....goodbye full ride...another reason to hate that man!

Not trying to be rude but could you clarify what you just said? Is that "letter grades below B- cause one to be rejected" or "if a student has 4 or more grades below B- they are rejected"?

If it is the latter, that is a pretty arbitrary number...

I don't have 4 or more grades below a B-, so that can't be it for everyone.

Wait a second, now this is really freaking me out! Do you mean "B- and below" or "Below a B-"? I didn't indicate +/- on the application because my counselor said it wasn't necessary, but I have 9 B's on my transcript: 4 in English and 5 in Math, and only one of them is a B-. If they decide to go worst case and assume all of my B's are B-'s...I don't wanna think about it.

Yes, that is what her counselor was told...dd's also magnified by the fact that my dd's happened Jr year. Didn't care that school very competitive, classes were honors/AP and extremely hard teachers that she got her B- and below grades in. School had to provide every grading period even though colleges only require final grade in the class; so her 2 bad grades turned into 4 and she was eliminated...didn't matter that the rest of her attributes more than matched when grading is the most arbitrary of them all...the message they are sending is that she should have attended some crappy public school or taken baby math and science instead of more challenging courses. The algebra teach she had also teaches AP Calc and only 1 person in the class of 6 has an A...this in a class of 14 NMSF...only 6 wanted to take AP Calc because this teacher is so impossible...his rationale is that they all end up passing the AP exam. First she gets a crappy grade from him, then can't continue in honors math due to the crappy grade and has to take CP pre-calc this year but now he has cost us a scholarship. I can't believe she is one of the bottom 1000...yes it's an honor to receive SF status but I'd rather have the full ride in tuition.

My S got some Cs (tho fortunately none in senior year) and was about the 50%tile in his class--had relatively low GPA & was a NMF in 2006. His test scores were high for PSAT & SAT & he had some decent ECs. I would not be too freaked out about grades as they can't be changed if they're in the past.

Oh, in per quarter grades. I got a D one quarter in the class I ended up with a C+ in cumulatively. I guess that explains it.

I have gotten 4 grades in the C range at least. So I guess I will not be making the cut even with 232/2320/3.5 UW.
That sucks.

I think what HImom said pretty much confirms they have gotten much stricter this year. If Top 50% used to get accepted but kids with a couple B-'s or C+'s here or there are getting rejected this year than they obviously have tightened their policy, I would assume for financial reasons. Though that seems strange since most of the NMF scholarships are institution based.

Base on what I read here, NM is definitely much stricter this year. The "only 1000 people not making it" might not hold true anymore. In past years all of you shall be NMF with no problem. The normal "B+" average, and SAT 2000+ might not be sufficient this time.

Well, the top 50% was at a uber-competitive HS where he's doing better in college than he did in HS, so it's not just any HS. S ddi have some Bs and some Cs--I have heard that NM has never liked seniors to get Cs & believe some kids didn't get NMF based on that. Hard to know what NM is doing as they don't publicize. Your GC should be able to let you know what happened in the past. They do want to know 1st semester grades of senior year.

My son had pretty good grades in his Junior year except some B+ in languages. He also got Math award in his junior year and completed multivariable calculas in summer got 5. Took 5 AP's and doing IB. He scored 800 in Math2, 790 in Physics, 780 in chemistry in SAT2 subject tests. This is really clueless why they turned down my son.

Yes, it makes no sense. Can you appeal?

You might want to talk with the GC at the HS to see what options are available. They like lots of ECs, I believe. At least, that's my understanding. S added a lot of ECs his senior year to increase his chances of getting NMF. A friend whose son was class president & homecoming king & tons of other things didn't get it because he got a C 1st semester of senior year.

I don't know how to appeal. My son contacted his counselor, she is clueless too.

senior year 1st semeter grades are just arived. NM people already made their decission. He got all 4 A's and few B+ in his 1st semester.

my dd will have straight a's both quarters of this year, including AP English but NM doesn't know that....when we get her report card, I'm mailing with a letter...she only had 2 bad grades, times 2 qtrs, during first semester Jr year, and her second semester Jr year grades were great also so to me that's an upward trend.

You can call the number on your letter if your counselor won't call.

thank you ddd928. that's good idea I will send letter with the 1st semester grades.

I am so sorry for all of you guys who didn't make it. My son was a finalist last year. His GPA was 3.95 unweighted but SAT was "only" 2200. Besides GPA, SAT and essay, one of the requirements for finalist is school recommendation. Did any of you guys somehow **** off the powers that be so your "recommendation" might have been lukewarm or negative?

My son is only one from his school who got NMSF. His counsellor like's him. I have no idea what she wrote but definetly no negative remark.
