In the FAQ on this forum it says that the Finalist rejection letters will go out in the first week of January. However, I didn't find anything on their website. It is now the first week on January. Does anyone know when these are going to go out?

Pretty sneaky they are, not mentioning those rejection letters anywhere.

If you read through this thread, starting on this page, you see that in 2013 they were mailed 1/9 and first report of one posted on the 12th.

Good luck.

Don’t be surprised if they are later than usual this year as the last sitting of the SAT in December was postponed due to weather related issues in many parts of the USA.

Yikes an even longer wait? I’m so nervous

Rejection letters would normally get mailed out tomorrow…

However, since the Dec SAT was delayed in some states because of weather, maybe the letters will go out next week.

Anyone have any further word on when these will (or did) go out?

Would this week be the week?

No one reported that they got one last week so my guess is that they went out last friday the 10th and people should start getting them(if they are rejected) tomorrow. I don’t think the Dec. SAT delay would have caused that much of a delay for National Merit. They could have completed everything for each application just pending the SAT score and I would guess that the vast majority of semi-finalists had their sat scores in a long time ago.

Someone should call National Merit and see if they can get an answer.

To those of you who receive the letter (not wishing that on anyone, but we know there will be some), could you please include info about your stats to help everyone better understand NMSC processes? Not so much about ECs and personal circumstances, as NMSC doesn’t seem to care about that. Though if you want to vent and verbalize about how to formulate an appeal, that’s fine of course.

But in particular, include how many semester ‘C’ or lower grades are on the transcript sent to NMSC. Or, if you are one of the unfortunate souls whose school includes qtr. grades on transcripts, # of qtr. ‘C’ or lower grades. What classes earned those grades and in which year? That seems to be their criterion. No holistic stuff, at least as far as I know.

Since NMSC apparently tightened their standards last year, it will be interesting to see if that trend continues and becomes the norm, or if possibly they might relax to their previous requirements.

Also include the date received and date of letter, as those waiting to hear will want to know.

Thanks, and much sympathy offered in advance. Some of the stories I recall from last year were utterly heart-rending.

I’m still safe for today… not looking forward to a week (or more) of anxiously checking the mailbox :(

My friend received the letter, got a ton of C’s freshman year but then has been an A student since. 225+ on PSAT, 35 ACT

My S has a letter. He’s not home and I won’t open but I’m guessing its the dreaded rejection letter. He has 4 semester C’s I think. Enough that I haven’t been too optimistic.

What would the delay of SAT scores have to do with the rejection letters?

Barfly, one could be rejected for not having a high enough SAT score, which they’d only know once they see the latest batch of SAT scores.

To those who got rejected, what states are you in?

can we get stats and location from everyone who got the letters

Do any of you guys know if National Achievement rejections come around the same time as National Merit?

My DS got rejected: SATs high enough (2240), but bad freshman year grades. We thought that might be an issue. We’re in KY.

I have a 2310 SAT and a 3.52 UW/4.46 W GPA (I have always taken the honors course when available, but we don’t have APs). My school only reports end-of-year grades (not even semesters), and I have no Cs. I think that I should have nothing to worry about, right? We don’t rank, but I am in the middle of the top fifth, so probably about the 90th percentile (meaning #7 or #8) in my class. My school is one that sent more students to Harvard than any other school last year (and Penn is #1 for us so far this year).

Has anyone gotten a dreaded letter in PA?

Thanks, mathmomvt. I’m aware of that. I just thought the “confirming” SAT scores were due before the December SAT, so I didn’t think the delay of December scores would matter. Good to know that NMSF can use the December scores, in case any of them need to try one more time to hit that magic 1960!
