I highly doubt it takes you of of Trustee. If you are qualified for more than one scholarship (ie NMF/Presidential and Trustee), you will be given the higher one, which would be Trustee. Don't worry...

hmm... I haven't gotten any scholarship letters from USC yet...

which makes me nervous cause I thought all NMfinalists got presidential?

Trustee and NM => you will be given the higher scholarship, I am pretty sure.

Wow all you people who got NMF's.... congrats...

My PSAT wasn't that hot and so no NMF for me. However, I did receive an invitation for Presidential interview. =) Hm... just wondering, what's the chance that I'll get bumped up to a Trustee?

Yes, ALL NMFs automatically get Presidential. I was worrying about the same thing last year because the letter made it sound iffy.

ooh okay. thanks!! do you by any chance know when this scholarship letter is sent? I got the one to the semi-finalists that says you have to do these things to get the scholarship, but since I qualified and did the two points, I haven't gotten anything else yet.

I asked someone in the admissions office that question and he said the letter would come sometime in March.

Wait....by when do you have to designate USC as your first choice for National Merit. I'm a NM Finalist and I also qualified for trustee, so I'm not sure about listing USC as my first choice if I get the full tuition already (might as well use National Merit money for another school...)

But if I wait to see if I get the Trustee's on April 2nd, will it be too late to get USC's NMF scholarship? Or will the scholarship be available for a while?

This is from the Parents Forum and refers to the information packet that the NM people sent you. If you're unsure, definitely call them and/or USC to verify it.

"Look on page three in the box and it says that you essentially have until April 24 (before April 25) to notify National Merit that you want to change your first choice school. If you notify them by April 24 that you are now undecided, you have until May 31 to make your final first choice school known to NMSC."

If you were not invited to interview for Presidential or Trustee scholarships and you are a National Merit Scholar, did you receive the no Presidential/Trustee letter?

No I did not receive the no PRes/Trustee letter. Instead I received a letter telling me about the NMF Presidential scholarship. =] But this is also having been accepted already in the second wave. It might be different for NMFs who have not been accepted yet.

i'm a NMF and i got the notrustee/midyear letters. i have gotten a couple letters over the last months/year from usc regardinf national merit and how to get the svholarship for it. on the trustee letter it addresses NMF's by saying if you are a national merit finalist and designate USC as your first choice you will receive a nm presidential

Here's the webpage that says ALL NMFs are Presidential Scholars & qualify for 1/2 tuition. You can call USC to confirm & ask them to send you an e-mai confirmation (tho we never did, just trusted what they told us on the phone). My S was a NMF & got 1/2 tuition Presidential as a NMF + a small NMF award + a small engineering merit award; all 3 are renewable for all 4 years, as long as he maintains at least a 3.0 and makes satisfactory progress toward his engineering degree.

National Merit Finalist Presidential
Amount: Half tuition (approximately $16,750)

Number of Awards: Varies

Selection Criteria: Selected on the basis of PSAT performance. Entering freshmen are considered if they have been designated as National Merit Finalist and name USC as their first-choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Application Process: Students will be contacted by the sponsoring agency.

Notification: April 2, 2007

I am national merit scholar finalist, and I was still asked to interview for the trustee scholarship. However, it did seem that many of the kids for trustee did not have national merit scholarship.

OK, my head's officially spinning from the confusion, and I'm a Trustee scholar...

The weird thing is that when I was interviewing Presidential scholar candidates, I came across a couple NMFs. I don't remember seeing any NMFs in the Trustee candidates I interviewed, but then again I obviously interviewed a small portion of the candidate pool. Perhaps as Misoobishi mentioned earlier, if USC thinks you have the potential to be bumped up - which is difficult to do unless all of your interviewers really think you're the best qualified out of all of the candidates they interviewed that day - then maybe that's when they send the letter to Explore USC and the interviews.

Also, S2530S2, where did you get the number of scholarships awarded stats? I'm a College Ambassador, and they don't give out those numbers to us :S

2007-2008 (us..!)
Expected Numbers for Scholarships:
Trustee: 100
Presidential: 200
Deans: 250 (woah)
National Merit: Varies

do most NMF's get accepted and get the NM prez?

NMF -
Have you received the official scholarship letter from USC?
When did you receive it?
Did you receive the no scholarship letter?
Did you interview for either presidential or trustee scholarships?
Did you receive presidential or trustee?

My daughter:
1. Has not received anything in writing from USC at any time regarding NMF
2. Was invited to interview for a Presidential scholarship and did so.
3. Has not heard anything since then.

(And we're going a little crazy wanting it finished.)

I just got my financial aid package for USC and it included the presidential on there for NMF.

Jennqtf4, Did you get it in the mail or online?
