National Merit Finalists! KY, OH, FL, TX ? Full Rides $$

@delilahxc OK, thanks! I was just curious about WHERE they go, and I opened up the link that someone posted, and many Finalists also choose Ivy and Top colleges in nation (so they do NOT take the Full Ride)

Yes, I realize that our choices are very different… we just need to VISIT more… I think my son would like the academics at UTD, but would need to GO there to see the atmosphere. The vibe at KY— I am sure he would like-- since it gives traditional college town experience. But we won’t know until we go

@SlitheyTove To clarify about Alumni and/or Legacy scholarships. On the Common App, Carnegie asked if any parents or Grandparents went there. answer is YES

Then, if u review their site, it discusses Alumni . (where a potential MATCH may happen, from a special Alumni/Legacy Donor) From there, student might get that extra $$

In addition, they have Presidential scholarships
http://www.cmu.edu/leadership/pres-fellow-scholar/

That’s why if a student might be interested in a TOP college, he should apply, and see what he MIGHT get
in offers! It would be a shame if for a valedictorian to NOT apply to his dream. (then he would NEVER know
IF he got in, and IF they gave him $$)

And I already called Carnegie on the phone, and they agreed with my Info. Of course, your circumstances may be different than ours… so each student MUST find out AFTER they APPLY ;

@2sunny Did you ask if scholarships reduce need? At most top schools, they do. For example, say the student is eligible for $20,000 in institutional grant $ and then the student is awarded $2000 in an alumni scholarship. The grant money is now reduced to $18,000 bc the student’s need was reduced by $2000 and there is a $0 net gain.

If a student qualifies for $0 in institutional grant $, then the scholarships will bring down their COA, but for kids receiving institutional aid, the $$ often just flips around and there is no real change.

Your premise that they will do whatever they can to make it completely affordable is pretty much a dream.

@SlitheyTove we did the Calculators before applying, and we are comfortable with the results.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek For some reason, I am unable to view what you wrote.

To all who BELIEVE IN a special DREAM… then come ABOARD my ship !

Thanks to all who sent me messages of love, support, & understanding in our dream college (whether it is the full ride, or a TOP college that my son has worked VERY hard to achieve) :-*

@2sunny What are required student’s Stats to get a presidential scholarship at CMU under SCS (DREAM) ?

@grtd2010 If you are asking about GPA, SAT, ACT and 2 Subject SAT tests (we did all)—
do u want to know HOW to get into CMU? my son performed at the tippy top in all categories, but I would encourage all high achievers to apply to their dreams… since they look at portfolio for leadership, music, sports, volunteering, etc

@grtd2010 About CMU, it is 5% acceptance rate for CS, but around 20% for Computer Engineering (you get 2 Letters from each college! So you get 2 chances!

my motto is “Never deny a child his dream… to take away his dream is the word MISERY…
who wants to be miserable for 4 years?” :-*

Oh *** PLEASE*** just because a kid doesn’t get into their DREAM SCHOOL or they get in and their parents can’t afford it or they don’t want to graduate with DEBT it doesn’t mean they’ll be MISERABLE in the college where they end up. Many, many, many kids “bloom where they are planted”

So how much have you already paid out of pocket for applications fees and to send scores to 21 schools? Don’t forget to add that amount to the first year COA of the school your kid ends up at.

If you have no problem paying full freight for your kid’s DREAM school why are you so concerned with National Merit and the GPA it takes to maintain it?

@3scoutsmom we don’t pay full sticker price for ANY school. we got FREE waivers on many APPS that top colleges sent us (we did NOT ask for waivers… they GAVE us the waivers, and many LOCAL schools ARE FREE TO APPLY FOR ALL KIDS)

I am NOT concerned with things you ASSUME in your notes. do NOT ASSUME anything about ANYONE.

I said that I do not want to take away a dream for such child, it does NOT mean that will be miserable, but if he is FORCED TO GO SOMEWHERE That he is MANDATED TO DO, he could become DEPRESSED!

@3coutsmom I would NEVER FORCE anyone to go to a school that he was not interested in,
so please do NOT make FALSE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT others. I did not say all kids will be miserable,
I said I would NOT want to take away his dream… now maybe his dream is to go ASU out west (that has HUGE $$$$$$$$$$ for NMF !!! Do NOT make wrong CONCLUSIONS ------ until you KNOW ALL THE FACTS

@3scoutsmom Did I ever say I would pay FULL FREIGHT for a DREAM? NOPE, I NEVER SAID THAT,
so please do NOT make up stories which is like terrible nonsense

@3coutsmom For me, that would be RIDICULOUS to pay FULL STICKER PRICE FOR ANY SCHOOL< and I will NOT !!! So, learn the TRUTH before you jump to conclusions. Now, maybe a child’s dream is to become a Professor, and if he/she is NMF & would be happy at any of the many choices in AL, FL, OH, KY, TX, etc… then great!!!
Take the FULL RIDE!!! No brainer!!! So, please LEARN THE truth about others and accept the fact that we applied to many choices. We applied to many choices to open up the doors for a possible dream! ^:)^

@3coutsmom here is YOUR QUOTE So how much have you already paid out of pocket for applications fees and to send scores to 21 schools?

DOES IT REALLY MATTER?? I can crunch the numbers for you, but that was a ridiculous question from you.

We are very lucky to have choices. We can take the Full Ride, OR we can wait for more choices in late March.

I will repeat my motto::::::::::: my motto is “Never deny a child his dream… to take away his dream is the word MISERY…
who wants to be miserable for 4 years?” :))

@2sunny What are stats for you son ? It seems that you are expecting a Presidential Scholarship award at CMU in SCS for your son. Presidential scholarships are awarded to a very few students in SCS. My DD is a NMF too.

Oh, I will add to that Motto: If his dream is FULL RIDE at college he enjoyed visiting, then take it, and be
thrilled ! Please learn the TRUTH before making incorrect statements about other people :))

OK, sorry, but AFTER 8 pages of this I just have to ASK. What’s with all the RANDOM caps? I’m SERIOUSLY confused. :-/

@3scoutsmom PS We kept our cost at minimum, since a couple of colleges in our state TOOK FREE SCORES from guidance counselor, & then ALL colleges only received either the SAT or ACT. we did NOT sent both ACT and SAT to all ---- in order to keep our cost at minimum… but for us, what matters is that our SON IS HAPPY.

We are adamant that we would NEVER, ever force him to take the Full ride! But there is very good chance he might
be delighted at the choices (including the full rides) WOW! :-*
