National Merit Finalists?

I know that in the past, Florida gave full rides to NMFs, but does anyone know what their latest policy is?

Or, better yet, are there any NMFs that attend UF?

They aren't doing that anymore. Check the website for the new policy. I think they stopped that program a couple of years ago.

I am only talking out of state, don't know the situation for instate, but I would think that bright futures would cover the cost, or at least most of it if your grades are high.

So Bright Futures applies to out of state as well!?

I thought it was only in-state. I guess it was more of an assumption, though.

Bright futures is for in-state students only.

The nearly full ride ended with the class of 2010. The old scholarship/stipend was $5500/year + bright futures if you were in state. If you were out of state, out of state tuition was waived. The new amount is significantly less than this, but something is better than nothing. The UF administration decided they didn't need to pay NMF to come to UF anymore, they figured they would come anyway and I think for the most part they still are. There still our several large state universities that still give NMF full rides; Arizona State being one of them.

UCF and USF also have awesome packages for NMF's

This is true. The new amount for in-state is $1000 per year, with a one-time $1000 research stipend. I'm not sure what the out-of-state amount is, but I know it's significantly more than that(due to higher cost)However, I just spoke to a UF admissions officer 2 days ago and he said that the amounts might be revised this year because, as it turned out, $1000 per year wasn't enough to still attract the NMF's, and they only got about 150(opposed to their 240 the year before). He said that the final amounts would be declared around mid-november, after they have seen how many NMSF's have applied. This is important because the main reason they reduced the amount is that it was causing too much of a budgetary strain. So if less NMSF's apply, then they will probably increase the amount.

great info, thanks!

so when they decide on the new policy, where will I be able to find it?

The new policy has been around for awhile actually. I just know that NMFs dont get anywhere near as much as 2010's NMFs.. the old nfms pretty much got paid to attend UF

yeah... but this is what I was talking about.

"I just spoke to a UF admissions officer 2 days ago and he said that the amounts might be revised this year"

Graj08, this is an interesting development. Please keep us posted if you hear anything more. Since the policy would take effect after the Nov 1 application deadline, would it pertain to the class of 2012 of the class of 2013?

no problem. I would assume that the info could only be found(even after it is announced) by talking to an admissions rep, as right now they don;t publish their award on the web site.(It just says 'a significant monetary package') Also, to answer your question, I assume it would be for the class of 2012, as the guy told it to me, and I am a senior in high school.

Cool. I'll be in the class of 2013, so I guess I'm good either way :]

So, are you well connected with UF admissions reps?

Not extremely well connected, but I talk to them whenever they visit our school. My school is in florida and is one of the top schools in the nation(#3) so they visit quite frequently trying to recruit people. From these visits, I've gotten to know a few.

that's cool. yeah, keep us posted.
